The bowl is hemispherical, made of dark steel with a mottled patina and muted reflections, encircled at its lower edge by a broad gilt band densely engraved with scrolling floral arabesques. Rising from the apex area is the slender nasal guard, a long bar ending in a leaf or arrowhead shaped plate, embellished with engraved ornament and a small heart-shaped escutcheon hanging over the forehead with intricate filigree patterns. Flanking the nasal bar are two short cylindrical plume holders set at an angle. At the very top, the stump of a broken spike is visible where a finial once stood. From the rim hangs an aventail of chain mail, forming a rectangular curtain with two pointed triangular extensions at the center and uneven side edges. Thousands of tiny interlocked steel rings create a dense, dark, slightly rusted mesh with a rough yet flexible texture, varying from lead gray to brownish tones. The mail would have protected the ears, neck and shoulders. The whole object conveys both martial solidity and refined decorative craftsmanship.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a steel helmet with gold and brass from North India, dated to the 1600s by an unknown maker and linked to Mughal soldiers. The surface shows floral decoration made by damascening, a process where gold wire is hammered into grooves cut into the steel. The leaf-shaped nasal guard slides down to protect the nose, while the small tubes on its sides held plumes, most often black heron feathers or white aigrettes. The apex spike is broken off and the padded cotton lining that once lined the interior is now missing. It belongs to the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department and was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Severance.","como_mirarla":"Start with the golden band and the central nasal guard, then move to the twin plume tubes and the engraved forehead plate. Notice how the dense ring mesh falls with weight below, contrasting the shine of the gold inlay with the dull darkness of the steel.","dato_curioso":"Damascening allowed Mughal armorers to create lasting golden patterns on steel without melting the gold, by hammering fine wire into chased channels, a technique prized for both durability and beauty.","preguntas":["How does this helmet balance practical protection with display of status?","What does the missing plume and interior padding suggest about its age and use?","How does the contrast between heavy steel and delicate golden florals affect your perception?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Yelmo hemisférico mogol con guarda nasal y cota de malla","se_ve":"Sobre fondo negro degradado a gris, el yelmo ocupa el centro vertical de la imagen, fotografiado de frente en una toma de estudio con luz pareja. I focus on the steel patina, that lead gray with brownish touches that tells of rust and centuries.
