The upper two-thirds form a dense, slightly irregular band whose top edge undulates and frays. Within it, raised needlework creates elongated leaf- or fish-like forms, small curls, dots, and intertwined figures that are difficult to identify at this scale. Irregular openings pierce the work throughout, some clearly part of the pattern and others probably losses from age. Two narrow horizontal bands divide the main field from a lower section of more open bobbin lace, built from repeating X-shaped crossings, diamonds, and tiny knotted clusters. Along the sides are small breaks, loose fibres, and faint yellow-brown stains, especially near the lower lattice. From the bottom edge hangs a long fringe of dozens of thin, separate threads, almost as long as the lace band itself. They twist, cross, and curl unevenly, ending in fine points at different heights. The light is even and frontal, revealing a matte, fibrous, slightly lumpy texture and subtle shadows in the holes, with no other object to indicate scale.","contexto":"The source identifies this piece as Lace Edging with Fringe, made in Venice, Italy, in the 1500s by an unknown maker. It is linen, combining needle lace made as cutwork insertion with a bobbin-lace edging and fringe, and it belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a Gift of J. H. Wade. Venice was a major early centre for lace in this period, when such edgings could trim clothing or household linen. Its original garment or object is not known, and neither is the individual maker, probably because textile work of this kind was often collective and unsigned.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the long fringe, then travel upward toward the densest band. Notice how the intentional openwork changes meaning once you spot frayed edges and small losses. Look closely at the elongated motifs in the upper rows: they shift between leaves, fish, and abstract scrolls.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail is that the boundary between finished lace and loose thread is most visible at the bottom: the orderly lattice dissolves into dozens of free strands of unequal length, so the fragment shows both the structure of lace and its unraveling at once.","preguntas":["What might this edging have finished originally, and how does that unknown change the way you read the fragment?","Where do you draw the line between deliberate openwork, wear, and damage?","What does the survival of such a fragile, unsigned textile suggest about whose labour museums preserve?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Borde de encaje con fleco","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo negro uniforme, al centro de la imagen, se presenta de frente un fragmento pequeño, casi rectangular, de encaje de lino en tono hueso. I focus on what time has left behind: a small linen fragment in bone tone on a black background, with no scale reference, its edges frayed and with yellow-brownish stains. Against a deep black, like a night sky, floats a constellation of bone-colored linen full of voids. The irregular openings are like stars or galaxies, some made on purpose and others opened by time. The dense upper band looks like a nebula with fish and leaf shapes, and the lower net of crosses and diamonds is a celestial grid. The hanging fringe is like comet tails, loose threads that twist and cross at different lengths under even light.","es":"Este encaje me recuerda a un mapa estelar.
