The fragment is long and narrow, with a straighter, denser upper edge once meant to be sewn to fabric, and a lower scalloped edge that hangs in five prominent bell or fan-shaped points. Each bell encloses an open network of ultra-fine threads forming ovals, diamonds and six- or eight-pointed stars at the core, surrounded by a densely looped, scalloped border that looks like tiny petals or picots. Between the bells, airy geometric bridges with openwork meshes act as windows onto the black ground. Light catches the raised, slightly thicker outline threads while the inner nets remain delicate and translucent. On close inspection one notices loose fibers, minor uneven tensions and gentle fraying at the ends, all signs of handmade bobbin work and of the textile’s fragility. The overall composition is rhythmic and symmetrical, yet each rosette keeps subtle handmade variations in density and knotting.","contexto":"Source records identify this work as Lace Edging with Bell Points by an unknown maker, dated to the 1600s and attributed to Genoa, Italy, made with bobbin lace technique known as rose lace. It is part of the Textiles collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art, a gift of J. H. Wade. No information survives about its original owner or specific use, but such edgings were probably applied to elite collars, cuffs, veils or linens in Baroque Europe. Genoa was a leading lace-making centre in the seventeenth century, alongside Venice and Flanders, and its bobbin method allowed complex floral and geometric motifs to be built thread by thread without a woven ground.","como_mirarla":"Start at the straighter top edge and move down to the five hanging bells. Pause at the centre of each to find the starburst formed by taut radiating threads. Then follow the curly picoted rim around each oval and notice how the empty spaces become as important as the threads themselves.","dato_curioso":"Bobbin lace is created by weaving dozens of threads wound on wooden bobbins over a pillow, following a paper pattern and crossing the bobbins like braiding, which allows long continuous edgings without a needle or loom.","preguntas":["How does the repetition of the five bells, with their small handmade differences, affect your sense of rhythm?","How does seeing the lace as an architecture of threads and voids change its meaning beyond decoration?","What does the patience required to make such a fragile piece suggest about luxury and labour in the 1600s?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Puntilla con puntas de campana, Génova, siglo XVII","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo negro mate se extiende una tira horizontal de encaje de color marfil blanquecino, ligeramente amarillento por el tiempo. From my conservation table I see time stitched into this yellowed ivory tone.
