In the foreground, occupying the lower right, a woman kneels in profile, facing left, wearing a long salmon-pink kimono with fine white swirling patterns and a broad train spread behind her. Her black sash is decorated with leaves, fans, and pink and white motifs, and she holds a thin, long object against her skirt. Her black hair is dressed high and held by many radiating hairpins. Behind a low, light-colored desk to the left sits a second woman with very long, loose black hair falling over her shoulders. She wears pale robes with red underlayers and holds a fine brush near her face, gazing down thoughtfully at a large open, blank-looking book. Beside the book is a small rooster-shaped detail. At the lower left, partly cut off, is a decorated brazier holding a white kettle with a red cloth. Above, a railing, a bamboo trellis, and a dark branch with small pink blossoms cross the cream background. Black calligraphy appears at the upper and middle right. The lines are fine, the colors flat, and the inking slightly grainy.","contexto":"This is one sheet from a triptych of woodblock prints titled Courtesans of the Ōgiya on a Spring Outing, by Utagawa Toyokuni (1769-1825), dated to the mid- or late 1790s, during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the complete set shows courtesans from the Ōgiya house entering an open pavilion and gathering inside around a hibachi. The woman at the desk is Hanaōgi, the house's most celebrated courtesan in the late 1700s. Depicted as a poet and skilled calligrapher, she is set apart by her pose and loosened hair. This view only shows part of the triptych, so the full outing is not visible here.","como_mirarla":"Start with the woman at the desk and her loose hair, then compare her with the carefully coiffed woman in the foreground. Next, follow the blossoming branch across the top and notice how spring enters the interior. Look last at the small details on the desk and beside the brazier, which slow the scene down.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: on the low desk, beside the large open book, there is a tiny dark object shaped like a rooster, easy to miss between the two women.","preguntas":["What does Hanaōgi's loose hair tell us about the moment being shown, compared with the other woman's formal hairstyle?","How does the image present intellectual skill as part of a celebrated courtesan's public image?","What might change in the reading of this scene if the other two sheets of the triptych were placed beside it?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cortesanas del Ōgiya en una excursión primaveral","se_ve":"Grabado japonés en madera, de formato vertical, con dos mujeres en el interior de un pabellón, sobre un piso amarillo verdoso claro. I focus on the materiality of this woodblock print.
