In the foreground, Hercules, bearded with curly hair, lifts Antaeus off the ground, locking his arms tightly around the giant's chest and pressing his back against his own; his legs are firmly planted, bare feet grounded, and his face shows strain and focus. Antaeus, younger and beardless, hangs suspended with legs entwined, mouth open in a gasp of suffocation and arms limp at his sides. The anatomy is rendered with extremely fine cross-hatching and stippling that model volume, shadow, and skin texture. Behind them, a lion skin with mane and paws flutters like a cape, suggesting motion. The background features jagged, craggy rocks on the left, a leafy tree with a gnarled trunk on the right, and scattered stones on the ground. In the upper left corner, a Latin inscription in capital letters identifies the scene. At lower left, the date 1545 and the monogram HSB appear. Hercules' club lies discarded on the ground at his feet, a small but telling detail.","contexto":"An engraving from 1545 by German artist Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), part of a series of twelve tiny prints devoted to Hercules and associated with the so-called Little Masters, Renaissance printmakers celebrated for highly detailed miniature works prized by collectors. The scene depicts Hercules strangling Antaeus, the giant of Libya who was invincible while touching the earth, by lifting him from the ground. According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, the series includes three of the canonical twelve labors — the Nemean Lion, the Lernaean Hydra, and Cerberus — together with other episodes from the life of the hero, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmena, whose moral and physical trials made him a favorite classical subject in Renaissance art. The Latin caption at the top names the action.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central embrace and the tension of the interlocked muscles. Then follow the lion skin that frames the struggle and emphasizes movement. Finally notice the club on the ground and the Latin inscription: they reveal who the hero is and that he wins by strength alone, without weapons.","dato_curioso":"Although the print is only a few centimeters wide, Beham rendered the lion's fur, the grain of the rocks, and even the gasping expression with hair-thin lines, a hallmark of the German Little Masters' skill in miniature engraving.","preguntas":["What does it suggest that a hero wins without weapons, simply by lifting his opponent from the earth?","How does spotting the abandoned club at Hercules' feet change your reading of the fight?","Why would an artist choose such a tiny format to tell an epic, larger-than-life story meant to be viewed up close?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Hércules estrangulando a Anteo, de la serie Los Trabajos de Hércules","se_ve":"En el centro de una estampa grabada en blanco y negro, dos hombres desnudos y musculosos luchan cuerpo a cuerpo sobre un paisaje rocoso.
