A single muscular nude man fills almost the entire sheet, twisted diagonally in front of a thick, gnarled tree trunk. His torso faces the viewer, displaying a sharply defined chest, abdomen, veins, and ribs built up with dense networks of fine parallel lines and cross-hatching. His head, small in proportion to the body, is turned in profile to the right; he has short curly hair, a tense expression, and a slightly open mouth. Both arms are raised and bent around the upper part of the trunk, and one large hand projects forward at upper right, its palm and spread fingers foreshortened toward the viewer. A heavy cloth drapes behind his back and bulges out on both sides. His legs are crossed and contorted: the right leg stretches down to a bare foot gripping a horizontal branch at lower left, while the left knee is sharply bent. Fine hatching creates a pale, almost empty background, with a few grasses and a small snail-like shape at the lower right. At upper left are the date '1550' and a monogram with the letters M and F.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this 1550 engraving by Danish artist Melchior Lorck (1526/27–after 1588), who worked in a German context, isolates Haman, the Old Testament villain, from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. Lorck may have seen the figure in person, or known it through a print or drawing; this is not known for certain. The source notes that he carefully rendered the musculature and outline, but struggled with foreshortening and with the proportions of the body in relation to the head, probably because artists outside Italy around 1550 did not generally draw from live models or study anatomy directly.","como_mirarla":"Start with the hand jutting toward you in the upper right, then compare it with the small head beside it. Follow the body's diagonal down to the crossed legs and the foot braced at the lower left. That tension between carefully rendered muscle and awkward perspective is the key to the print.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: the outstretched hand in the upper right is nearly as wide as the man's face, a foreshortening effect that makes it loom toward the viewer.","preguntas":["What changes when a figure is removed from a vast painted ceiling and shown alone on a small sheet of paper?","Does the imperfect perspective make the body seem weaker, or more strained and vulnerable?","What can a copy reveal about how an artist learned, and about the distance between one artistic culture and another?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Hombre crucificado — Melchior Lorck según Miguel Ángel, 1550","se_ve":"Grabado vertical y estrecho en tinta negra sobre papel blanquecino y envejecido, encerrado por un delgado marco rectangular.
