The etching, in black ink on cream paper, unfolds with fine lines and crosshatching to show dozens of small figures: maimed soldiers, beggars and sick people. On the left, a cluster of cloaked men with crutches and broad-brimmed hats converses beside an elderly man with a cane and an amputated leg; another crawls on the ground. Toward the middle, several figures drag themselves, lean on crutches or sit hunched, with drooping hats and ragged clothes. In the right background, a circular well with a pulley gathers women washing and carrying. The architecture combines facades with open windows, laundry hung on balconies, irregular rooftops and ruined walls opening onto a fortified gate. The light is even and almost documentary, without deep dramatic shadows, revealing textures of stone, fabric and metal. Along the lower edge, three blocks of text in early modern French accompany the scene.","contexto":"An etching from 1633 by French artist Jacques Callot (1592–1635), part of the series Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre, comprising 18 prints. The series is one of the most famous early depictions of the horrors of war in the seventeenth century, made during the Thirty Years’ War and the French occupation of Lorraine. This plate, number 15, shows the fate of soldiers after combat: the field hospital and beggary. The caption at the bottom, in French, explains that some die, some are left crippled crawling on the ground, and others reach the hospital. The museum source provides no further description, but the work is widely studied as an early critique of warfare.","como_mirarla":"First scan the crowd in the foreground from left to right and notice how each body tells a different injury. Then lift your gaze to the central church and the buildings enclosing the square, to read the space as both shelter and enclosure. Finally look at the small groups by the well and the text along the bottom edge, which frames the scene as a collective fate.","dato_curioso":"Callot pioneered the use of hard varnish for etching, which allowed him to draw extremely fine details with great sharpness and to produce series that circulated widely across Europe.","preguntas":["How does it feel to see so many wounded bodies together in an everyday square rather than on a battlefield?","How does your reading change when you contrast the monumental architecture in the background with the fragility of the figures in front?","What parallels do you see between this seventeenth-century image and the present-day consequences of war?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Las Grandes Miserias de la Guerra: El Hospital, de Jacques Callot","se_ve":"En primer plano, una plaza irregular de adoquín se abre entre edificios altos y una iglesia de cúpula y frontón triangular al centro. I see black ink on cream paper with beige and stone gray tones, worked with fine lines and crosshatching. I notice how each crutch, cane and wide-brimmed hat is drawn with precise economy to distinguish dozens of injured figures. I am interested in how the even, almost documentary light preserves every detail without dramatization, revealing the wear of the paper and the acid bite on the plate.","es":"Veo tinta negra sobre papel crema con tonos beige y gris piedra, trabajada con líneas menudas y sombreados cruzados.
