The surface is executed in black-figure on a reddish-orange ground, with black glaze covering the foot, lower body, neck and lip. On the belly, in sharp foreground, a rooster in profile faces right, with comb and dark beak, a mottled body in faded red and cream, and an arched tail with boldly striped black and off-white feathers and thin legs; beside it float two stylized lotus buds, one reddish with a pale tip and a smaller one below. A dotted band runs around the shoulder and fine lines frame the decorated zone. The vase shows age clearly: fine crackling, glaze losses and areas where the pale Corinthian clay shows through, especially on the handle and neck, plus glossy reflections on the black glaze. Side lighting casts a soft shadow to the left, emphasizing volume and the slightly rough, ceramic texture.","contexto":"This wine jug or olpe by an unknown maker, dated to about 575 BCE, is attributed to Middle to Late Corinthian production, although it closely resembles Athenian vases. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is simply decorated with a rooster and two lotus blossoms. The pale buff Corinthian clay is visible on the handle and in areas of loss, but the background of the figural zone was covered with a red slip imitating the reddish, iron-rich Attic clay. On the back, two reserved red crescent shapes probably represent eyes, a motif found in more detailed form on many drinking cups of the period. The specific workshop or painter is not recorded.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central rooster and the sharp contrast between black glaze and orange ground. Then look at the pale handle and the red slip to see the Corinthian imitation of Athenian clay. Finally notice the two reddish crescents on the back and how they can read as watchful eyes.","dato_curioso":"Though it looks Athenian, the jug is Corinthian and uses a red slip to mimic the natural reddish color of Athenian clay, which is richer in iron.","preguntas":["Why would a Corinthian potter want his jug to look Athenian, and what does that suggest about taste or trade at the time?","How does knowing the two crescent marks on the back may be eyes change your reading of the object?","What does the choice of a single rooster with just two floral motifs convey compared to vases with crowded mythological scenes?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Olpe de figuras negras con gallo, Corinto, hacia 575 a.C.","se_ve":"En el centro de la imagen, sobre fondo oscuro degradado de negro a gris, aparece una jarra de vino de cuerpo ovoidal con pie anular, cuello corto y boca trilobulada ligeramente desconchada, y un asa vertical alta, curva y gruesa en tono crema amarillento que se eleva por encima del borde. I pause at the cracked surface and the losses of black glaze on the neck and rim, where the pale buff clay of the handle shows through.
