It occupies almost the entire height of the image, and its elongated proportions guide the eye downward, compartment by compartment. It is divided into six stacked rectangular registers, separated by dark horizontal bands; several registers are topped by a semicircular arch framing the main figure. The ground of the textile is golden ochre, rough and visibly fibrous, while the figures are woven in a very dark brown, almost black with purplish undertones. Three main human figures can be made out, with rounded bodies, large heads, raised or bent arms, and legs in poses suggesting movement; they hold small objects in their hands and wear fabrics or garments marked with stripes and dots. Between them are animals and less legible forms, also dark, one of them upside down in relation to the others. The side edges are frayed, with tears, holes, loose threads, and missing corners, especially at the top and bottom. The surface shows the grainy texture of the weave, small irregularities, worn areas, and changes in density. At this scale, facial expressions are barely suggested by dots and lines, so gestures and silhouettes communicate more than faces do.","contexto":"According to the source, this work dates from the 500s, was made in Egypt during the Byzantine period, and its maker is unknown. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of George D. Pratt. It was woven in undyed linen and dyed wool, using tapestry weave with supplementary weft wrapping. The orientation of the figures indicates that these were vertical bands descending from the shoulders of a tunic. The source describes two bands with dancers, a hunter, a shepherd, and animals such as dogs, rabbits, and a lion, although in this photograph only one band is clearly visible. Who wove it and who wore it are not known.","como_mirarla":"First follow the band from top to bottom as if reading a column, noticing the rhythm between human figures and animals. Then look at the arches framing the bodies and the raised arms. A key detail is the upside-down animal: it breaks the pattern and recalls that this decoration was made to be seen on a moving body.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual observation: one of the animals is woven upside down in relation to the human figures, so the band does not read in quite the same way from every viewpoint.","preguntas":["How does the meaning of these figures change when we imagine them moving on the shoulders of a person wearing the tunic?","What might the combination of dancers, a hunter, a shepherd, and animals have meant to the wearer?","How does the textile's present fragility affect the way we read images that were probably once vivid and close to the body?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Bandas ornamentales de hombro de una túnica","se_ve":"La pieza aparece como una banda textil extremadamente larga y estrecha, fotografiada en vertical y centrada sobre un fondo liso de color beige grisáceo. What moves me most is the fragility you can see right away.
