The eyeball is a shaded white sphere with soft gradients that give it planetary volume, while the pupil is a dense, velvety black blot with an irregular edge, deeply saturated. Around the upper rim, spiky radiating filaments like eyelashes or electrified fur burst outward, drawn with fine, sharp strokes that form a bristling dark halo resembling flames. The surrounding background is left almost empty, a vast pale void that makes the eye appear to levitate in a desolate sky. At the lower right, an abrupt rocky outcrop rises, rendered in heavily loaded carbon-black strokes with jagged edges and deep shadows that contrast sharply with the eye’s pallor. At the upper right, a cloud-like penumbra of loose cross-hatching descends like smoke. Light seems to emanate from the eyeball itself, glowing with a milky luster. In the lower left corner the plate mark Pl. IX. appears in small type. The composition is stark, dreamlike and uncanny, built on an extreme play between intense black and the white of the paper.","contexto":"An 1888 lithograph by French artist Odilon Redon (1840–1916), part of a series inspired by Gustave Flaubert’s novel The Temptation of Saint Anthony (1874). According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this portfolio is one of three Redon devoted to Flaubert’s fantastical account of a hermit’s moral trials in the desert, attempting to capture in lithography the dense blackness of his charcoal drawings. The works do not illustrate the text literally but evoke its dark, imaginative tone through invented monsters, otherworldly settings and jarring tonal contrasts. Though Redon felt the prints successfully translated Flaubert’s surreal universe, they were largely misunderstood in his own time and are now seen as precursors to Symbolism and Surrealism in 19th-century France.","como_mirarla":"Let your gaze settle first on the floating eye and its pitch-black pupil, then follow the bristling filaments that crown it like fire. Notice how the luminous emptiness and the dark rock below make the sphere feel both tiny and colossal, suspended between sky and earth.","dato_curioso":"Redon called these works his «noirs» and prized lithography for preserving the deep, velvety black of charcoal, visible here in the contrast between the matte pupil and the pearly sheen of the eyeball.","preguntas":["How does it feel to be stared at by an eye without a face or body, floating alone in the landscape?","Do you read the eye as a divine presence, an inner judgment, or a desert hallucination?","How does the image change if you imagine the eye as a sun or as a living creature watching you?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Por todas partes los ojos están en llamas, de La tentación de San Antonio","se_ve":"En el centro de una página vertical de papel color crema y textura ligeramente granular, flota un enorme globo ocular aislado, visto de frente y ligeramente desde abajo.
