It is a long, narrow textile band, markedly elongated in proportion, with the slightly irregular surface of handwoven cloth. More than the upper two-thirds are a uniform off-white, where a fine, dense, horizontal weave is visible, with small variations in tone and texture. At the top edge remains a very short, sparse fringe of red threads, little more than a vibrant line. Toward the lower third the character changes: a narrow band of red-and-white checks appears, followed by stacked horizontal bands in black, pale sage green, and dark purple. On two black bands, small beige motifs repeat, like twigs, X-shapes, or interlaced zigzags. The decorated center is occupied by two identical red diamonds, side by side on a grayish-green ground, each filled with a grid of tiny light dots. Below, the pattern of bands repeats almost as a mirror image before returning to off-white. The lower end finishes in long, uneven, slightly tousled cream wool fringe, some threads falling farther than others, softening the geometric rigor.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a “Hopi Brocade” style dance sash, made by an unknown author around 1880–1900. It is catalogued as Pueblo (Hopi), Native North American work from the Southwest, from the Post-Contact, Transitional Period. It was made in plain weave with supplementary weft wrap, using homespun wool and Germantown wool. Germantown yarns were commercially manufactured yarns widely traded in the Southwest in the late nineteenth century, and are often associated with vivid colors. The maker's name, the sash's specific owner, and its precise ceremonial use are not recorded in the source.","como_mirarla":"Start with the long, quiet expanse of plain cream cloth, then let your eye drop to the concentrated burst of pattern at the bottom. Notice how the bands repeat almost like a mirror around the two red diamonds. Finally, compare the two ends: the tiny red fringe at the top and the long, untidy cream fringe below.","dato_curioso":"The intense red likely reflects the use of Germantown yarn: commercially produced yarn, originally associated with Germantown, Pennsylvania, that reached Indigenous weavers in the Southwest through trade in the late 1800s.","preguntas":["How does the balance between the large undecorated area and the concentrated lower pattern change the way you read this sash?","What might the combination of homespun wool and commercially traded yarn tell us about Hopi life and exchange around 1880–1900?","How might this textile have changed when worn and in motion during a dance, rather than hanging flat in a museum?"]},"es":{"titulo":"\"Hopi Brocade\" Style Dance Sash — Banda de danza hopi, c. 1880–1900","se_ve":"La pieza se presenta vertical, completa y centrada sobre un fondo gris muy claro, fotografiada de frente y sin personas. I see a long, narrow hand-woven sash displayed vertically against a light background.
