The beak is large, hooked and closed, with a marked commissure and a slightly bulging cere; above it, the eye is almond-shaped, deep-set and highly expressive, surrounded by finely incised lids and short feathers suggested by radial strokes. The forehead and crown are smooth and domed, polished by wear and by reflected light that creates a silvery highlight on the upper part. At the back of the neck, ruffled plumage appears with jagged incisions. The background is a plain, light grey that emphasizes the dark volume of the coin. The metal is silver with a brownish-grey patina, but with bright areas where light strikes directly. The edge of the stater is irregular, slightly off-center and with tiny nicks and striking cracks. Below the beak, near the lower rim, a small vegetal form can be glimpsed, identifiable as an ivy leaf, though very worn and dark, easy to miss at a quick glance. Despite the actual small size of a coin, the scale feels monumental, like a sculptural portrait in miniature.","contexto":"This is the obverse of a Greek silver stater from around 400 BCE, probably minted at Elis in the Peloponnese, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. The die engraver is unknown, as is common for coinage of this period. The piece is classified as Coins and belongs to the Greek and Roman Art collection. The eagle head type is frequent in the coinage of Elis, linked to Olympian Zeus, whose sanctuary was at Olympia. No specific information is recorded about the findspot or circulation of this particular example.","como_mirarla":"Start with the eagle's eye and follow the curve of the beak outward; then look at the lower left for the small dark relief of the ivy leaf. Notice how light creates contrast between the polished brightness on the forehead and the deep shadow of the eye, giving the impression of a living gaze in such a tiny object.","dato_curioso":"Elis coins with the eagle celebrated Zeus, and the tight, detailed portrait of the bird aimed to convey power and vigilance in only two or three centimeters of diameter, like a portable sculpture.","preguntas":["What does the eagle's expression convey to you, fierceness, calm or watchfulness, and why?","How does your perception of the coin change when you think of it as an everyday object and not just an artwork?","What effect comes from seeing an animal at such a large scale within such a small format?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Estátero: Cabeza de águila y hoja de hiedra (anverso), c. 400 a.C.","se_ve":"En primer plano, casi llenando el cospel irregular, aparece la cabeza de un águila vista de perfil hacia la izquierda, trabajada en alto relieve. If you look closely at the eagle head you will notice the worn metal, that brownish gray patina with silvery highlights on top where light hits directly.
