In the center, a dark wooden cross rises from a small greenish mound. Christ hangs with arms outstretched, head bowed to one side, eyes closed, wearing a crown of thorns and a white cloth around his hips whose ends flutter stiffly. His body is pale, elongated, and thin, with visible ribs, drops of blood at the hands, side, and feet, and legs crossed at the ankles over a single nail. At the upper part of the cross a small inscription is barely legible. To the left stands the Virgin in a very dark blue-green mantle, almost black, over a white wimple; a fine rayed halo surrounds her covered head, her eyes are lowered, and her hands are pressed together over her chest. To the right, Saint John wears a long deep-red robe, has a thin circular halo, curly hair, clasped hands, and a sorrowful, downcast face; one bare foot emerges beneath his hem. In the lower right foreground, smaller in scale, a tonsured monk in a voluminous white hooded habit kneels in profile, hands joined, face lifted toward Christ. His robe pools in heavy folds on the ground. At the lower left lie a human skull and a long bone among stones and sparse plants. The paint surface shows fine cracking, especially in the Virgin's dark mantle.","contexto":"According to the source, this 1460 panel, in oil and gold on wood, shows a Carthusian monk kneeling in prayer before the Crucifixion, with the Virgin on the left and Saint John on the right. It was probably made for a monk's cell in an unknown monastery. Founded by Saint Bruno in 1084, the Carthusians sought strict separation from the world through silence, prayer, poverty, and solitude, and were especially devoted to Christ's Passion. The white cowled habit identifies the monk. Authorship is uncertain: the source lists Rogier van der Weyden in one field but elsewhere states that the artist has not been identified.","como_mirarla":"Start with the gold ground and the stillness of the three standing figures, then move down to the kneeling monk. Notice how close he is to the cross without touching it, and how the skull at the lower left shifts the scene from a historical event toward a meditation on his own death.","dato_curioso":"Carthusian communities were traditionally limited to twelve monks, the apostolic number, although the source notes that exceptions were sometimes made.","preguntas":["What changes when a living worshipper is placed inside a sacred scene rather than outside it as a viewer?","How do the gold background and the absence of a landscape affect the sense of time in this image?","What role do the skull and bone play for someone who might have contemplated this panel every day in solitude?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La Crucifixión con un monje cartujo","se_ve":"La composición es vertical, simétrica y muy quieta, sobre un fondo plano de oro bruñido, sin paisaje ni arquitectura.
