The paper is aged, in shades of cream, beige, and pale ochre, with irregular, slightly worn edges, soft stains, and small marks of use. Almost the entire surface is covered with dense handwriting in black ink, arranged in tight horizontal lines. On either side, a vertical red line creates a margin; in those narrower side spaces the script becomes smaller and more compact. Within the main text, short strokes, dots, and occasional words or signs in bright red punctuate the black writing at regular intervals. Near the center, interrupting the lines, there is a solid vermilion-red circle, slightly irregular, which becomes the visual focal point despite having no image inside it. The writing varies in thickness, suggesting a hand-drawn pen and changes in pressure. At the upper right corner there are faint later inscriptions in pencil or faded ink. There are no human figures or landscapes: the visual force comes from the contrast between fragile paper, dark calligraphy, red accents, and the serene geometry of the central circle.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is folio 39 (recto) from a Kalpa-sutra, made by an unknown artist in western India, in Gujarat, in the last quarter of the 15th century, circa 1475–1500, using gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper. The Kalpa-sutra is an important Jain text that recounts the lives of the Tirthankaras, especially Mahavira, and is traditionally read during the festival of Paryushan. Its long, horizontal format probably derives from earlier palm-leaf manuscripts. The exact place of production and the identity of the scribe are not known.","como_mirarla":"First, follow the rhythm of the lines from left to right and notice how the red marks organize the reading. Then move closer to the central circle and the uneven edges. That empty center, surrounded by words, changes the page from a block of text into an object with balance and pause.","dato_curioso":"The red circle at the center probably preserves the memory of the string hole in palm-leaf manuscripts: even when paper no longer needed a cord to bind the leaves, the mark remained as part of the page's design.","preguntas":["What changes in our reading when a text is also experienced as an image?","What role do the central circle and the red marks play in a page without illustrations?","How does the wear on the paper shape our idea of the people who read, kept, and passed down this folio?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Texto, folio 39 (recto), de un Kalpa-sutra","se_ve":"La pieza es una hoja horizontal, larga y estrecha, mucho más ancha que alta, mostrada completa sobre un fondo claro. What holds me is how fragile and resilient it is at once.
