The composition is split into two zones by dense clouds and bands of diagonal hatching that suggest sky and distance. Above, amid swirling clouds drawn with short curved strokes, tall heavenly doors stand open. Only the lowest part of the ascending figure remains visible as it disappears upward, at a noticeably small scale: bare feet, the hem of a garment and one hand can be made out. The artist's monogram appears in the upper left corner. Below, a tightly packed group of kneeling figures surrounds a rough central rock, its surface scratched with vertical lines and dark patches and its flattened top marked by small footprint-like shapes. The witnesses wear broad tunics, cloaks and mantles whose folds are modelled with close parallel and cross-hatching. Most tilt their heads back and gaze upward; some press their hands together in prayer, others open them in amazement. Careful details reward slow looking: tight curls, bearded profiles, a hooded head bowed at right, turned backs that block our view, and in the foreground the sole of a kneeling man's shoe beside the long hem of his robe.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this woodcut, The Ascension, is by the German artist Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480-1538), dates to c. 1515, and was given by The Print Club of Cleveland. The title places it within The Fall and Redemption of Man, probably a narrative print series moving from the Fall to salvation. It depicts the episode told in the Acts of the Apostles in which Christ ascends to heaven before his followers after the Resurrection. Woodcut, made by carving a wooden block and printing it in ink, allowed religious images to circulate in multiple impressions in early sixteenth-century Germany.","como_mirarla":"Begin at the top, where what matters most is almost gone, and then follow the apostles' upturned faces. Next look at the flat top of the rock between them and the small marks left there. The scene is less about the departing figure than about those who remain below, looking at an absence.","dato_curioso":"A striking visual fact is that Christ is barely present: only feet, drapery and a hand remain visible as he passes through the heavenly doors, while tradition holds that his footprints stayed on the Mount of Olives.","preguntas":["What does it do to the story to show Christ almost vanished rather than triumphant in the centre?","How do the turned backs and crowded bodies make the viewer feel like one more witness on the ground?","What is the role of the empty sky and the marked rock between heaven and earth?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La caída y redención del hombre: La Ascensión","se_ve":"Es una estampa vertical en tinta negra sobre papel color hueso, de superficie ligeramente granulada, rodeada por un marco lineal grueso. The Print Club of Cleveland. I focus on the bone-colored paper and its light grain, because that is where the history of this black ink print lives. The dense clouds and diagonal hatched bands create an atmosphere that divides the earthly from the heavenly.
