At the far left is a short, darker section of fine, regular mesh with a straight, finely toothed edge; the main lace begins over it. The rest is linen lace in off-white, cream, and pearl-gray tones, translucent, with a tiny hexagonal net as its ground. Woven over that mesh are denser, more opaque motifs: multi-petaled flowers, curving leaves, scrolling stems, small berries, and openwork lozenges with crosses and diamond-shaped dots. The design repeats and mirrors itself along the band, with a more compact motif near the center. Both long edges are wavy and scalloped, like small waves finished with tiny points. The light is flat and diffuse, without strong shadows, revealing the contrast between transparent areas and slightly satiny borders. Two faint yellowish specks can be seen, along with a delicate texture, almost like tissue paper, even though it is made entirely of interlaced thread.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is one lappet from a pair, made in Valenciennes, France, between 1740 and 1760, by an unknown maker, in linen using the Valenciennes bobbin-lace technique. It formed one of the two streamers that framed the face in a woman's headdress known as a \"lace head,\" which was made up of three pieces. The source notes that very few complete lace headdresses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries survive, and it points to two other objects in the same museum to show a complete set. Who made this piece and who wore it are not known.","como_mirarla":"First follow the band from one end to the other and notice how the floral pattern repeats and mirrors itself. Then look closely at the contrast between the almost transparent net and the opaque flowers: there is no change of color, only of thread density. The short, darker section at the left changes the reading, showing that this delicate ornament was also a constructed, wearable object.","dato_curioso":"The whole drawing —flowers, leaves, diamonds, and background— is made with linen thread in practically a single pale tone; the image appears only because some areas are woven densely and others are left as an open, transparent net.","preguntas":["What does it change to imagine this band moving beside a face, rather than still and stretched out against black?","How much time, patience, and skill can be sensed in a surface made almost entirely from a single thread and a single color?","Why do complete garments so often disappear while small fragments like this one survive in museums?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Punta de encaje (una de un par)","se_ve":"Una banda textil muy larga y estrecha se extiende en horizontal sobre un fondo negro uniforme, ocupando casi todo el ancho de la imagen y muy poco del alto, lo que subraya su forma de cinta. As a conservator I am amazed by this very long and narrow band on a black background. On a hexagonal mesh that looks like a dark and transparent sky, flowers and leaves appear like stars linked by curling stems. The central motif is more compact, like a cluster, and the diamonds with crosses shine like small geometric groups. Even the wavy scalloped border looks like an orbit. I like that, although it is only one of a pair that framed the face, it suggests a sky map woven with linen thread.","es":"Esta cinta me hace pensar en constelaciones.
