At its center rises an extremely tall, slender structure, seen head-on and in slight perspective from below, filling almost the entire height of the sheet. At the bottom sit three low, square basins whose sides are decorated with openwork tracery panels of arches and circles; from them rise sturdy piers with attached columns, capitals, and bases modeled with dense shading. In the middle zone are very tall window openings, steep little roofs, and side turrets clipped by the edges of the plate. Above, curved flying buttresses join the towers to the central body, forming two large arches, left and right, decorated with curling leaves, small gargoyles, and floral finials. Within those arches hangs a delicate web of tracery, like stone lace, full of trefoils and interlaced curves. The crown is a sharp central spire topped by a cross, flanked by smaller pinnacles also ending in crosses and stylized fleurs-de-lis. There are no human figures and no landscape; the background is simply the empty paper. Light comes not from any depicted source but from the contrast between reserved whites and the deep blacks of line and cross-hatching, which give volume to the imagined stone. Everything feels fragile at the top and heavy at the base.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this engraving, dated to about 1470 and made in Flanders, is attributed to the anonymous Master W with the Key, active roughly between 1465 and 1490. It probably shows a Gothic table fountain, with water flowing from gargoyle heads into the square basins below. The museum links prints of this kind to the close ties among goldsmiths, architects, and engravers, and to the workshop world of fifteenth-century Gothic cathedrals. Such designs may have served to circulate or record projects. The artist has also been associated with the circle of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy; whether this specific fountain was ever built is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start at the small basins at the bottom and move slowly upward, following the pillars as if following water in reverse. Then pause on the two great arches in the middle: their stone tracery is the most delicate part. Finally, compare the heavy base with the almost fragile spire — that contrast is the design's main idea.","dato_curioso":"Despite its monumental appearance, this is an intimately sized print meant to be handled and studied up close — the whole cathedral-like structure exists only in fine ink lines on a narrow sheet of paper.","preguntas":["Is this a practical blueprint, a record of an existing object, or an ideal fountain that was never meant to be built?","How does the experience of a fountain change when it is shrunk to the scale of a tabletop object?","Why represent something meant to hold water and reflect light in dry black lines on paper?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Diseño para una fuente gótica — Maestro W con la Llave, h. 1470","se_ve":"La obra es un grabado vertical y estrecho, en tinta negra sobre papel amarillento y ligeramente texturizado, con márgenes amplios y desiguales. What hooks me is how the deep black ink contrasts with the yellowish, textured paper to fake volume. The central spire is extremely sharp and ends in a cross, flanked by smaller pinnacles also topped with crosses, all in absolute verticality. The two large side arches with flying buttresses frame emptiness like orbits, and the hanging tracery looks like a constellation in stone. There are no human figures or landscape, just empty paper around, so the structure floats.
