The surface is lit softly from the upper left, leaving a small shadow to the right of its uneven base. Saint Andrew fills the vertical frame; without a scale reference his actual size cannot be judged from the image alone. Behind his shoulders rise the two rough beams of an X-shaped cross, one steadied by his raised left hand, its fingers long and stiff against the wood. His lowered right hand hangs open beside his hip. He has heavy-lidded eyes, a high forehead, dense curled hair falling to his shoulders and a full, textured beard, giving him a careworn, middle-aged presence. He wears a belted undergarment and a voluminous cloak whose upper folds are cut into deep, angular, almost crumpled planes, while the skirt falls in long straight grooves to his feet. The oak is mid-to-dark brown with visible vertical grain, knots, chips and abrasions, and only faint traces of former paint remain. The small irregular plinth looks especially worn at the front.","contexto":"Saint Andrew, carved in the Netherlands around 1515–20 by the artist known as the Master of Elsloo, an oak figure with traces of paint. The source states that apostle figures were produced in large numbers in the eastern Netherlands in the early 1500s. His X-shaped cross marks him as Andrew. He was probably one figure from an apostle series, possibly placed above choir stalls or on an apostelbalk, a beam with Christ at its centre separating the nave from the sanctuary. The master takes his name from a polychrome group in the Augustinuskerk, Elsloo, and is probably Jan van Oel, active around Roermond c. 1500–1520. Its exact original church is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the X behind his head and shoulders, because it identifies him before his face does. Then look down through the cloak’s sharp, angular folds to the long, worn grain of the lower robe. The contrast between the tightly carved curls and the hands’ weary slackness changes the saint from a symbol into a tired man.","dato_curioso":"The Master of Elsloo is not a documented signature but a name of convenience: art historians gave it to the sculptor after a polychromed Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child that survives in the Augustinuskerk in Elsloo.","preguntas":["How does the figure change when we imagine it high on a beam, far above the congregation, rather than at eye level?","What does the contrast between the crisp cloak folds and the exhausted face suggest about sanctity in this period?","Now that almost all the paint has gone, do we read the oak itself as part of the work’s meaning, or mainly as loss?"]},"es":{"titulo":"San Andrés, hacia 1515-1520, un apóstol de roble hecho para mirarse desde abajo","se_ve":"En una fotografía de estudio se ve una sola escultura de madera, de pie y casi de frente, sobre un fondo liso que pasa del negro en lo alto a un gris claro en el suelo. What holds my attention is the oak surface.
