The leaf dominates the frame, about six times wider than it is tall. Its color is a toasted beige with shifts toward pale ochre and light brown, darker along the edges. The texture appears dry, fibrous and slightly rough, with lengthwise grain typical of palm and with the left and right ends irregular, frayed and somewhat broken, signs of age and handling. Across the surface lie three dense blocks of script in deep matte black ink, composed of small, rounded characters arranged in very even horizontal lines. Each block leaves narrow top and bottom margins where smaller annotations appear in a fainter, slightly reddish ink. About one third from the left and again toward the center-right are two clean circular holes, each rimmed by a lighter halo of the support, originally for the cord that held the manuscript together. The lighting is soft and even with almost no shadow, so the contrast between the dark ink and the vegetal ground is clear, as are tiny stains, hairline cracks and wear along the lower edge.","contexto":"The Cleveland Museum of Art records this as Folio 90 (verso) from a manuscript of the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina. It is associated with Eastern India, Bihar, Vikramashila Monastery, with painting in Nepal, Kathmandu, and is made with gum tempera and ink on palm leaf. The author is unknown. The department is Indian and Southeast Asian Art. The Prajnaparamita is a central text of Mahayana Buddhism, and this folio is an early witness to Buddhist book culture in northeastern India and Nepal in the 12th century.","como_mirarla":"Begin with the elongated silhouette and the two round string holes that divide the page into three text blocks. Then look closely at the minute, even calligraphy and the contrast of dense black ink on the pale vegetal ground. Finish at the chipped edges and marginal marks, which speak to hands-on, ritual use.","dato_curioso":"Palm-leaf manuscripts like this were pierced and strung together with a cord through the holes still visible, a binding method that allowed pages to be turned without a spine and explains the distinctly elongated format.","preguntas":["How does seeing the text as a fragile handmade object change how you think about it as reading matter?","What do the two holes and worn edges suggest about how this book was used and carried?","What connection do you see between the precision of the script and the religious act of copying a sutra?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Folio 90 (verso) del Sutra de la Perfección de la Sabiduría en Ocho Mil Versos, 1119","se_ve":"Se ve una lámina horizontal, larga y estrecha, de hoja de palma, fotografiada de frente sobre un fondo liso de color crema muy claro.
