Its color is a yellowish ochre, almost tobacco brown, with longitudinal veining and darker patches from age and handling. On its surface are three compact blocks of text in black ink, written in tiny, dense and perfectly aligned calligraphy that looks like rows of seeds. Each line is thin and continuous, with small, uniform characters filling the space with rhythmic regularity. Between the text blocks are two clean, symmetrical circular holes, made to pass the cord that once held the manuscript together. The background is a soft, warm light gray that accentuates the rough, dry and fibrous texture of the leaf. In the foreground the surface appears slightly bowed and stiff like cardboard, with small splinters at the tips, especially on the more worn right end. The light is even and frontal, without harsh shadows, revealing every crack, stain and the subtle sheen of the ink. There is no figurative illustration on this folio; the focus is entirely on the script and on the object itself, fragile, portable and made to be read up close.","contexto":"This is folio 6 recto from a manuscript of the Ashtasahasrika Prajnaparamita-sutra, the Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines, dated Sunday, September 14, 1119, year 239 of the Newar Samvat in the month of Ashvina. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, it was produced in Eastern India at Vikramashila Monastery in Bihar, with painting associated with Nepal, Kathmandu. The technique is ink and color on palm leaf. Vikramashila was one of the major Buddhist monastic centers during the Pala period. The scribe remains unknown. The work belongs to the Indian and Southeast Asian Art collection.","como_mirarla":"First take in the whole leaf from end to end to appreciate its elongated horizontal format. Then focus on the two binding holes and how the text is carefully arranged around them.
