Its upper point is slim and ends in short, frayed threads; the wider lower end slopes diagonally. The side edges are uneven, with tiny loose fibres, as if the piece had been cut from a much larger textile. Across its surface, a repeating pattern of curving stems, jagged leaves and scrolling vines in dark and greyish green unfolds over a worn cream ground. Among the foliage, partial animal forms appear in greyish brown and muted gold: near the centre, a winged creature can be made out in profile, while another, near the bottom, is cut off by the edge. There are also small clusters of pale circles, almost like flowers or berries. The light is diffuse and even, with no strong shadows, revealing the fine, regular weave, a few faded areas with a faint pinkish cast, and the very subtle sheen of the metal threads. Its real scale cannot be judged from the photograph, but the fragment feels delicate, flat and fragile — closer to a carefully kept cutting than to a complete garment.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this fragment was made by an unknown maker in Lucca, Italy, in the second half of the 14th century, dated 1350–1399. It is a brocaded lampas weave in silk and gold thread, acquired with funds from the J. H. Wade Fund. Lucca was one of medieval Europe's best-known silk-weaving centers, and patterned silks of this kind were luxury goods. What garment or furnishing this piece originally belonged to is not known; its triangular shape probably comes from later cutting or from reusing a larger textile.","como_mirarla":"Start with the triangular outline and notice how abruptly it cuts through the design. Then follow the vines from bottom to top and look for the animals hidden among the leaves. The partial figures at the edges change the reading: this is not a complete object, but a surviving piece of a larger cloth.","dato_curioso":"The pattern only repeats in fragments: no animal appears whole, because the cloth was cut down. What we admire today as a composition was once part of a repeating design meant to continue beyond every edge.","preguntas":["What might this silk have been part of before it was cut into a triangle?","Does the fragment gain or lose meaning when the repeating pattern is interrupted?","Who might have worn or used a silk woven with gold thread in the 14th century, and who could not?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La composición es accidental: el triángulo no es el diseño, sino lo que la supervivencia dejó de él.","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo liso de tela gris muy claro, ligeramente arrugado, se presenta un único fragmento de seda en forma de triángulo muy alargado. If you look closely you will see how fragile this silk and gold thread fragment made in Lucca between 1350 and 1399 really is. I am moved by the frayed edges with loose fringes and the worn cream ground where metallic threads still glint faintly. We know from the Cleveland Museum of Art that it is a silk and gold brocade from the second half of the fourteenth century, but its current shape is accidental, what remained after cutting a larger textile. Against the pale grey mounting cloth I see the cream field with green vines and two winged animal figures that appear only in part, like missing stars. Those small pale grouped circles look like distant clusters. As with the sky, here we also interpret from fragments.","es":"Me gusta pensar este triángulo como una constelación incompleta.
