At the center, full-length and in profile facing right, a lone woman stands on a narrow band of ground shaded with horizontal lines at the bottom. She takes up almost the entire height of the sheet, which emphasizes her long, narrow silhouette. She wears a dark dress, made almost black by dense hatching, falling from her shoulders to cover her feet and widening slightly toward the hem, like a column. Over the front is a pale apron of fine cloth with vertical folds, in strong contrast to the darkness of the dress. Across her chest stands out a broad, high, light-colored neckcloth, fastened at the center with a small bow and edged with detailed lace drawn in tiny dots and waves. Her sleeves also end in lace cuffs; from one emerges a forearm covered by a tight, wrinkled glove or sleeve, the hand hanging relaxed with long, clearly defined fingers. The other, smaller hand rests near her chest. Her head, turned three-quarters, shows a calm face, a straight nose, a small mouth, and curls escaping beneath a close-fitting, lace-trimmed cap. At lower right are the signature, the date 1640, and the number 4. There is no landscape and no other figure: only pale paper, with a few faint age spots.","contexto":"This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar (1607–1677), a Bohemian artist, is dated 1640 and belongs to the series The Several Habits of English Women, from the Nobility to the Country Women as they are in these times, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the print. Such series documented clothing by social rank and occupation, almost like a visual catalogue for contemporaries curious about fashion and hierarchy. It is not known whether this particular woman was a real sitter or a type assembled from observation; she probably represents a recognizable social type rather than an individual portrait.","como_mirarla":"Start with the sharp contrast between the almost black dress and the light apron, which splits the figure into two halves. Then move up to the lace-edged neckcloth and down to the hands: one rests on her chest, the other hangs loose. That quiet posture changes an image of clothing into an image of composure.","dato_curioso":"Hollar was born in Prague and built much of his career in England, where he became one of the most prolific etchers of the 17th century, recording everything from cathedrals to costumes.","preguntas":["What does this outfit tell us about this woman's social place, and what does it leave out?","Why show a type of clothing through a whole, still body instead of showing the garments alone?","What changes if we read the image as fashion, as social document, or as a portrait without a name?"]},"es":{"titulo":"La mujer con cuello alto, de Los diversos vestidos de las mujeres inglesas","se_ve":"Grabado vertical en tinta negra sobre papel amarillento y ligeramente rugoso, con márgenes amplios y vacíos. I focus on the support: yellowish and slightly textured paper, with wide margins and soft age spots that I preserve without erasing.
