On top, the recto: a nude young man fills almost the whole page, seen from behind in three-quarter view, his powerful torso twisted, his legs bent as if he were seated on air or pushing off from something. The body overflows the sheet — the head is only faintly sketched, one hand is cut off at the upper edge, a foot leaves the frame at the left. Red chalk builds up belly, ribs, buttocks and thighs with dense cross-hatching, so that the skin reads warm and taut against the pale paper. In the upper left corner, small and upside down, floats a lightly drawn head. Below, the verso is a scatter of separate studies on folded, stained paper: at the left a huge foot seen close up, toes and toenails carefully worked; in the middle, fingers and fragments; at the right, an unfinished torso and, lower down, a bald head looking sideways with a concentrated expression. Everything feels fragmentary, intimate, and still in the making.","contexto":"This is a preparatory drawing by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564), dated 1510-11 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a study, in red chalk over black chalk or charcoal, for one of the twenty athletic male nudes known as ignudi that frame the Old Testament scenes along the center of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. According to the museum, Michelangelo worked out the placement of these figures in red-chalk drawings before painting each section of wet plaster. The sheet has studies on both sides: on the recto, the nude youth above the Prophet Daniel; on the verso, further figure studies for the ceiling. Michelangelo devoted four years to that fresco.","como_mirarla":"Start with the monumental torso of the recto and follow the line from the raised arms down to the bent legs, noting how the body is cropped by the edges. Then turn to the verso: the giant foot changes the scale and reminds you that this is work, not a finished scene. Notice what is left unfinished — the faint head, the loose hands — because there Michelangelo is thinking, not displaying.","dato_curioso":"The Sistine ceiling has twenty ignudi in total, seated at the corners of the central scenes; this sheet studies just one of them, the one above the prophet Daniel.","preguntas":["Why would an artist draw the same body, and pieces of bodies, over and over before painting?","What changes in your reading when you learn that a body this monumental began as a sheet of paper this fragile?","Does the unfinished head on the recto make the figure weaker, or more alive?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Estudio para el joven desnudo sobre el profeta Daniel (anverso); estudios de figuras para la bóveda Sixtina (reverso) — Miguel Ángel Buonarroti, 1510-11","se_ve":"La imagen muestra las dos caras de una misma hoja de papel beige y envejecido, dispuestas una sobre otra. I see a sheet of aged beige paper, folded and stained, with studies on both sides, made in reddish sanguine over traces of black pencil.
