Each panel has a very dark, nearly black ground. In each one, two figures stand at the sides like supports: their bare torsos and heads are human, but their lower bodies taper into pale stone-colored pillars on small pedestals. A cloth in blue or greenish tones is knotted at each figure's waist. With one raised arm, bent over the head, each figure holds up a broad swagged canopy in dusty pink, cream, and deep red, with a scalloped lower edge; with the other hand, they touch a large ornate shield at the center. The shields have curling, light brown and cream strapwork frames ending in a point below. The left shield, in brown tones, shows a rearing animal, probably a lion; the right one, on a blue ground, shows a bird with outspread wings, probably an eagle. Faint capital letters appear beside the shields. Along the bottom is a strip of grassy ground in olive and beige with small tufts of plants. The woven surface is visibly ribbed and worn, with muted, aged colors and slight fraying and small holes along the edges.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a fragment of a two-sectioned tapestry border, made in the 1500s by an unknown maker, possibly in England — the question mark in the source records that uncertainty. It was woven in tapestry weave with wool, silk, and gold-wrapped thread, materials associated with costly domestic display. Such borders framed larger hangings and often carried heraldic shields, possibly linked to a patron or family. It is not known whom these shields and letters represented, nor what larger tapestry this fragment bordered. It comes from the Bequest of James Parmelee.","como_mirarla":"Start by comparing the two panels as if they were a nearly repeated pattern, then look for where the repetition breaks down. Notice how the figures' lower bodies turn into pillars and how each central shield changes the meaning of the whole section.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail: the four figures do not have legs. From the waist down, their bodies narrow into architectural pillars standing on small bases, blending human figure and building ornament.","preguntas":["What might the two different shields have communicated to those who originally saw this border every day?","How does the reading change when you notice that the figures are also pieces of architecture?","What is gained and what is lost when a fragment of a much larger textile is preserved on its own?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Fragmento de borde de tapiz de dos secciones, siglo XVI","se_ve":"Se ve un fragmento textil ancho y horizontal, apoyado sobre un fondo claro, dividido en dos paneles casi cuadrados por una franja vertical estrecha de color verde salvia deslavado. I first notice what time has done: that almost black background is muted and the pinks and creams of the canopy look dusty, with a ridged weave and tiny holes along the edges. I see wool and silk with gilt-wrapped thread, costly materials that now feel fragile and faded. The washed sage green band dividing the two panels and the olive green grass below have kept their color better. Each term figure, with a human torso and pale pillar, holds both the drapery and the shield, very demanding weaving work for a border.","es":"Me detengo primero en lo que el tiempo ha hecho: ese fondo casi negro está apagado y los rosas y cremas del dosel se ven empolvados, con la trama acanalada y pequeños hoyitos en los bordes. The very dark background works as night and against it the canopy in pink and cream and the shields shine like heraldic constellations. The symmetry of the two panels reminds me of a sky chart split into two hemispheres, separated by that sage green band that would be a meridian. The faint capital letters beside the shields are like barely visible stars. And that lion on the left and the eagle on blue on the right feel like guardians of this woven firmament.","es":"Pienso en este borde como en un cielo nocturno del siglo XVI.
