Occupying almost the entire height is a standing woman seen in three-quarter view, her body slightly inclined and her gaze lowered to the right. Her dark hair is swept up and held with long hairpins and a comb; her face is pale, with fine features and a quiet expression. In her arms, against her chest, she holds a small black dog with pointed ears, a visible eye and a tail curled over its back, stroked by one of her hands. She wears a long kimono in soft pink, peach and cream, with white flowers, striped bands and a fan motif near the hem, tied with a dark obi. Behind her there is an interior with a latticed shoji window and a wooden veranda floor in horizontal lines. To the right grows a leafy plant, and at the lower right sits a rectangular pot. Above, a horizontal panel shows a tiny landscape with pines and golden clouds. At the upper right is a black cartouche with Japanese characters, and at the lower right, the artist's signature. The outlines are fine, the coloring flat and worn, with visible paper texture.","contexto":"This is a color woodblock print made in 1783 by Torii Kiyonaga (1752–1815), one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of Japan's Edo period (1615–1868). It belongs to the series Popular Presentations and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it was a gift of Mrs. Henry S. Upson. Its very tall, narrow shape is characteristic of pillar prints, works made to be displayed on wooden posts inside houses. The subject, a courtesan shown in daily life rather than performing, belongs to bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women that were highly popular with urban buyers of the time.","como_mirarla":"Start with the narrow format and follow the woman from her hair ornaments down to the hem of her kimono. Then look for the small black dog tucked against her chest; its size and dark color change an elegant portrait into an intimate scene. Finally, compare the interior below with the tiny landscape painted on the panel above.","dato_curioso":"Pillar prints, or hashira-e, were made in this narrow format to hang on the wooden posts of Japanese houses, so artists had to compose an entire scene within just a few centimeters of width.","preguntas":["What does the small dog change in our reading of the courtesan's social image?","How does the narrow format shape the way we look at the body, clothing and interior?","What contrast emerges between the real interior and the landscape painted in the upper panel?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cortesana sosteniendo un perro (de la serie Presentaciones populares)","se_ve":"Grabado vertical sumamente alto y estrecho, sobre papel envejecido de tonos beige y grisáceos. I focus on how this paper has survived.
