It is a molded ink cake, elongated and narrow, with slightly tapering sides, a pointed, triangular top like the tip of a roof, and a gently curved lower edge. A raised, narrow border frames the whole piece. Its color is a deep, uniform blue, between teal and slate, with a matte, finely grainy surface. The entire front is covered in low relief made of very fine incised lines. At the top are overlapping mountains drawn with wavy contours, and a sinuous river winding between them. Below, in the middle, bare branched trees and denser clusters of foliage stand beside horizontal bands suggesting fields and water, rendered with short, parallel strokes. In the lower half, drooping willows with long, curving fronds partly hide tiered roofs and a small pavilion with a pointed roof. At the bottom, another stretch of water with rippled lines closes the scene, beside a striated bank. The light is soft and frontal, casting almost no shadow except within the relief. No people, text, or other objects are visible, and there is no reference for scale, though it appears to be a hand-held object.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this piece dates from 1780-94, during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911), in the reign of the Qianlong emperor (1736-95). It is one of ten molded ink cakes, of different shapes and colors, kept in a lacquer box. Each was inscribed in gold with a poem by Qianlong praising one of the ten famous sights of West Lake in Hangzhou. Ink cakes were moistened and ground with water on an inkstone to produce liquid ink for calligraphy and painting. These precious examples, however, were never used. The author is unknown, and which specific sight this cake represents is not stated in the source.","como_mirarla":"Start at the pointed top and follow the winding lines downward as if traveling from the mountains to the lake. Then look closely at the lower half: the roofs almost disappear among the willows, and that concealment changes a simple landscape into a place to be discovered. Note, too, that despite its fine relief, this is a tool meant to be ground down and disappear.","dato_curioso":"This ink is not liquid in a bottle: it is a dry, solid cake. It only becomes ink when water is added and it is ground on a stone, so a blue cake like this one would produce colored ink.","preguntas":["What does it mean to turn a landscape into an object that, if used, would be destroyed by grinding?","Why preserve unused ink cakes in an exquisite box instead of using them to write?","How does the deep blue color change your reading of a landscape traditionally associated with black ink?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Barra de tinta de un conjunto encargado imperialmente con imágenes y poemas de los sitios famosos del lago del Oeste, autor desconocido, 1780-94, China, dinastía Qing, tinta moldeada en azul, Cleveland Museum of Art, donación de Henry W. Es una barra de tinta moldeada, alargada y estrecha, con los lados que se afinan ligeramente, el extremo superior en punta triangular, como la cúspide de un tejado, y el borde inferior suavemente curvo. I pause on this blue ink stick from 1780 to 1794, made during the Qing dynasty under Qianlong.
