At the center rises the massive Palazzo Barberini, several stories high, with a richly articulated facade of windows and loggias, a smoking chimney and irregular rooftops; at its foot runs a row of low houses with reddish tiled roofs and pale walls. The vast square in the foreground opens empty and luminous, with soft gray shadows. On the right stands Bernini's Triton Fountain with its multi-lobed basin; closer to the edge, a large sculpted shell and a balustrade seen in foreshortening from a balcony. Tiny animated figures populate the square: a coach drawn by two horses crowded with passengers, soldiers with muskets, two men dueling, strolling couples, a horseman and a distant carriage on the far left street. The perspective recedes along a long avenue flanked by buildings and domes on the horizon. The light is diffuse, like a Roman midday, rendered with extremely fine, precise lines suggesting stone, tile and foliage textures. At the top a handwritten Italian inscription appears, and at the bottom a legend with keys A to G; the paper edges are worn and stained, with framing lines in ink.","contexto":"Work by Lievin Cruyl (Flemish, c. 1640-c. 1720), dated 1665, part of the series Eighteen Views of Rome. Made in pen and brown ink and brush and gray wash with graphite, it is a Baroque topographical veduta, a genre highly valued by travelers and Grand Tour collectors. Cruyl, a Flemish priest-artist active in Rome around 1660, documented monuments and squares with precision. The upper inscription identifies the site as Prospetto della Piazza di Sforza, now Piazza Barberina, and the lower legend names the Barberini palace, the fountain of Urban VIII, nearby churches and hills. The exact reason for the commission is not recorded.","como_mirarla":"Start with the Palazzo Barberini in the center and follow the square's recession into the distance. Then look at the small groups of people in the foreground, which give scale and daily life to the monument. Finally notice the handwritten labels and the pale blue wash that creates shadow and depth.","dato_curioso":"The Triton Fountain seen in the square is by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and had been completed just a few years earlier, in 1643, for Pope Urban VIII Barberini.","preguntas":["How does the contrast between monumental architecture and tiny figures shape the sense of space?","What does the drawing reveal about squares as stages for social life in the 17th century?","Why would a Flemish artist create such a detailed series of Rome and for whom?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Vista de la Piazza Barberini en Roma, 1665","se_ve":"Dibujo panorámico en formato apaisado sobre papel envejecido color crema, con tinta parda y aguada gris-azulada.
