At their feet lie loose stones, sparse tufts of grass and an overturned barrel. The ground is rough and broken, with ditches, scattered planks and patches of weeds leading toward the middle distance. To the left, a thatched cottage with a partly collapsed roof nestles among bushes beneath a large leafy tree whose dense crown is rendered with energetic, cross-hatched lines creating deep shadow. Further back, a smaller tree and a low, open horizon reveal a distant flat plain. The sky fills almost two thirds of the composition, vast and largely empty save for a few tiny birds drawn as small V shapes. The light is even and diffuse, typical of an etching. The linework is fine and lively, dense in foliage and shadowed areas.
