At its center, a chaotic battle erupts between land animals and flying creatures. At the top, clouds drawn with fine, wavy lines fill the sky, from which flocks of birds of different sizes descend. On the left, an enormous bird with outstretched wings and feathers marked in bands swoops downward, while smaller birds fly around it. At center right, large birds with open wings mingle with a dense cloud of tiny birds and insects, rendered as black dots and specks dispersing toward the left. Below, on the ground, an elephant with its trunk raised charges alongside galloping horses or wolves, a shaggy animal crouching at left, and other quadrupeds in full flight. In the foreground, set apart from the tumult, a turtle runs toward the left, a long-tailed rat above it, and, at right, a thick-tailed fox escaping with its mouth open. At the bottom is a handwritten inscription and the artist’s signature.","contexto":"Arthur Rackham (British, 1867–1939) made this drawing in 1902 in brush and pen with black ink and watercolor on paper. It illustrates the fairy tale “The Wren and the Bear,” in which the bear insults the wren, king of the birds, and provokes a war between flying creatures and land animals. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Rackham created this silhouette illustration for a luxury edition of *Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm*. Shown at the 1906 Milan International Exhibition as *The Battle between the Air and the Earth*, it won a gold medal, as noted in the inscription at the bottom.","como_mirarla":"Start at the top, following the birds as they dive from the clouds, then drop down to the stampede on the ground. Next, look for the smallest animals in the foreground: their isolation from the main battle adds humor to the scene. Finally, notice how a swarm made of tiny dots links the two armies.","dato_curioso":"Although Rackham is best known for intricate line work with delicate coloring, this work achieves its entire dramatic effect almost exclusively through black silhouettes against the bare paper.","preguntas":["Who seems to be winning this war between air and earth, and what visual clues tell you so?","Why might the smallest animals change the meaning of such a large battle?","What does the story gain by being told only in silhouettes, without facial details or color?"]},"es":{"titulo":"The Wren and the Bear / El reyezuelo y el oso","se_ve":"La ilustración, vertical, está realizada casi por completo en siluetas de tinta negra sobre un papel envejecido de tono crema, con bordes irregulares y manchas leves.
