On the left, dense Persian calligraphy in black ink fills the page: two neat central columns are enclosed by fine blue and gold rules, while further lines run diagonally around them and across the corners. Small triangular ornaments with red and blue flowers interrupt the writing. On the right is a vertical miniature framed in gold. Beneath a deep-blue, star-dotted sky rise pale lilac hills, dark-green cypresses, and a tree covered in white blossom. At the center stands a white tent patterned with blue flowers and a striped awning. Before it, on a richly patterned platform, two lovers face each other; the figure in orange offers a dish of red fruit. Attendants in blue, green, and red stand nearby with bowls. In the lower foreground, among green grass and small red flowers, a musician in yellow plays a long-necked lute beside a black horse that enters the scene from the right edge. Two small panels of Persian script are set into the painting itself.","contexto":"This is a double-sided manuscript folio, probably made in Shiraz, Iran, between 1540 and 1570, during the Safavid period. Its painted side illustrates an episode from the Khusrau and Shirin romance in the Khamsa, the five narrative poems by Nizami (1141–1209). Khusrau Parviz, a Sasanian king who reigned from 590 to 628, and Shirin, an Armenian princess, meet outdoors at night. According to the source, the figs and pomegranates she offers symbolize fertility. The other side carries Persian verses from Jami's Haft Awrang. The artist is unknown.","como_mirarla":"Start with the deep-blue sky and the white tent, then move down to the exchange of fruit between the lovers. Next, look for the musician and the black horse in the lower corner: music and travel frame the intimate encounter.
