Ochre walls with towers, crenellations, white domes, and flat roofs fill the upper half. Over one gate flies a large blue banner with gold motifs and a red border; curious faces peer over the walls, and through the main gate a rider in a green tunic on a black horse emerges toward the outside. At the center lies a surprisingly empty space of pale earth, broken pinkish rocks, and two dark little trees, separating the city from the fighting and guiding the eye. On the left, a group of men in white turbans and red, yellow, and blue garments, carrying spears, watch or advance; in the foreground below, foot soldiers and horsemen clash with swords, round shields, and gold armor. Near the lower center stands out a rider with a gold helmet on a richly caparisoned white horse, surrounded by fallen men and toppled horses. On the right appear orange parasols, drums, standards, and still more tightly packed combatants. Flat but intense colors — ochre, turquoise, red, gold — and meticulous detail in faces, fabrics, and ornaments create movement without losing order. Below the scene, outside the image, runs a line of calligraphy.","contexto":"This page was painted around 1596 in Mughal India, at the court of Akbar (reigned 1556–1605), and is attributed to Basavana and Sur Das. It illustrates the siege of Arbela in the time of Hulagu Khan, an episode told in the Chingiz-nama, the Book of Chingiz Khan included in Rashid al-Din's Jami al-tavarikh, or Compendium of Chronicles (1247–1318). It is made with gum tempera and gold on paper. The source notes that the event depicted had taken place more than 300 years earlier, and that in the late 1500s historical texts were increasingly illustrated with crowds of participants and a striking new naturalism. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.","como_mirarla":"Start at the walled city and follow the diagonal down toward the fighting, then return to the nearly empty ground in the middle. Notice how that pause separates power from violence. Finally, look for the rider on the white horse: his relative calm contrasts with the tangle of bodies around him.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual fact: amid so much tumult, the center of the page is left almost empty — a stretch of pale earth and broken rock that makes the battle below feel even more compressed.","preguntas":["Who holds power in this image: the city that watches from above, or the army that fights below?","Why leave the center of a battle scene almost empty, and what does that emptiness do to the story?","How is an event retold, more than 300 years later, by painters from a very different court?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El sitio de Arbela en la época de Hulagu Kan, página de un Chingiz-nama (Libro de Gengis Kan) del Jami al-tavarikh (Compendio de crónicas) de Rashid al-Din","se_ve":"La página, vertical y enmarcada por una fina línea dorada, se divide en diagonal: arriba, una ciudad amurallada; abajo, un campo de batalla abarrotado.
