Photographed in three-quarter view from slightly above, it turns its muzzle toward the left while its rounded rear extends to the right. It is a compact feline head with no visible neck, solid proportions, and softened contours despite its fierce expression. The stone is heavily speckled, mainly grayish green and dark gray with touches of beige and brown. Its grainy, rough texture is visible everywhere, flecked with tiny light and dark points. Soft light from above and the left models the volumes and leaves a short shadow under the jaw. Two short, upright ears with rounded tips crown the head. The eyes are deep oval hollows without pupils, ringed by curved grooves that make them look almost like closed eyelids. The muzzle is broad and flat, with a prominent nose and two round bumps on the cheeks or beside the nostrils. A horizontal incised line and a nearly rectangular frame outline the mouth, open in a snarl: short, blunt teeth appear in both jaws, a dark cavity opens behind them, and faint reddish tones show inside. Behind the frame, another groove drops down and circles the base, hinting at a fitting for a shaft that is now missing.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this stone mace head was made by an unknown maker in Costa Rica's Southern Nicoya region, around 300 BCE–600 CE. It was probably once mounted on a wooden shaft that has not survived. It may have served as a symbol of chiefly authority, a group insignia, the head of a ceremonial weapon, or all three, and such objects were eventually placed in elite graves. The feline is probably a jaguar, though that identification is not certain, as the question mark in the title indicates. Its maker, owner, and exact findspot are not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the open mouth and short teeth, then move up to the deep, almost closed eyes: the contrast softens the ferocity. Follow the incised frame around the muzzle toward the back to imagine the missing wooden shaft. Finally, look closely at the speckled surface, which gives the compact head weight and age.","dato_curioso":"Despite its snarling open mouth, the animal has no carved pupils or jaguar spots: its deep oval eyes look almost peacefully closed.","preguntas":["How does the meaning of the object change if we imagine it raised on a wooden shaft instead of resting alone?","Why pair an open, toothy mouth with eyes that seem closed?","What might a jaguar have signified to whoever carried or was buried with this head?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cabeza de maza (garrote) ceremonial: felino (¿jaguar?) — c. 300 a. I focus on the stone and its mottled surface, grayish green with beige and brown, grainy all over and speckled with light and dark dots.
