Its ground fabric is an aged cream linen, ivory in the light and more beige in the folds, with a fine, plainly woven texture and small areas of fraying, thinning, and reddish-brown wear near the lower edge. Almost the entire surface is covered with dark embroidery, now charcoal-gray to brownish-black, forming thick coiling stems that loop into ovals and spirals. Inside and around those vines are densely stitched flowers, pointed leaves, buds, and small curling tendrils; a star-like blossom appears at lower left, a fuller rose-like flower at center right. The raised thread looks granular and corded, catching light unevenly. A vertical seam runs down the center of the crown, covered by a narrow braided line. About two-thirds down, a horizontal band of dark, openwork bobbin lace separates the crown from the turned-back brim, itself embroidered with the same repeating pattern. The lace is fragile and broken in places, especially at the sides. The cap is slightly lopsided, its base wider than its rounded top, suggesting a flexible object made to fit a head rather than a rigid form.","contexto":"This is a man's nightcap made in England in the late 1500s, during the Elizabethan period. Its maker is unknown. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held, it was made from a single piece of embroidered plain-weave linen, cut and folded so that four points join at the crown and the lower edge turns back to form the brim. Specialist Jacqui Carey identified its silver thread and numerous period stitches. Who wore it, and on what occasions, is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the central seam and follow the vines as they curl around each flower. Then look closely at the band where the brim meets the crown: the fragile lace and the dense stitching change the reading from simple headwear to a piece of luxury textile work. Finally, notice the small tears and darkening that reveal its age.","dato_curioso":"The silver thread is not solid wire: it was made from thin strips of metal wrapped around a core of white silk, which explains its woven, cord-like texture.","preguntas":["What does such elaborate embroidery on an item associated with rest or private life tell us about status and domestic display?","How does the repetition of the same floral pattern in each section affect the balance between decoration and uniformity?","What can the worn lace, tarnished thread, and small tears tell us that the original design cannot?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Man's Nightcap [Gorro de dormir masculino], Inglaterra, finales del siglo XVI","se_ve":"En el centro de la imagen, sobre un fondo gris liso y apoyado en una superficie clara y ligeramente reflectante, aparece de frente un gorro blando con forma de cúpula. I pause to consider how fragile this piece looks and how much it has survived. The cream-colored linen is now thinned, with fraying and reddish brown worn areas near the lower edge, yet the embroidery still covers almost the entire surface. The dark embroidered stems on the light linen coil like orbits, forming ovals and spirals that remind me of constellations joined by lines. The dense flowers look like stars, one star-shaped at the lower left and another fuller one at the center like a rose, and the curly tendrils are like comet tails. The uneven sheen of the raised thread makes me imagine the old glint of silver that now appears charcoal gray.
