At center stands a winged female figure, nearly filling the height of the sheet, seen full-length with her head bowed and her eyes lowered. Short, spiky locks frame her serene face. She wears a long dress with a soft neckline, a belt at the waist, and a mantle draped diagonally across her body, falling in heavy folds to her bare feet. In her raised right hand she holds a chalice by its base; above it floats a small vertical oval, the host. Her extended left hand grips a tall, thin cross. Behind her shoulders, two textured wings rise. To the right of her feet leans an arched tablet with several lines of indistinct writing, and beneath her feet a scaly snake coils and twists across the ground, its head near an oval object at lower left. Sparse grass grows nearby. The background is mostly the blank paper, with a dark horizontal band behind her legs. At upper left, “FIDES.” is written vertically; a “5” appears at top, and the monogram “ISB” at right.","contexto":"This engraving, Fides (Fidelity, or Faith), by Hans Sebald Beham (1500–1550), was made in Germany around 1539 and belongs to the series The Knowledge of God and the Seven Cardinal Virtues, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Mr. and Mrs. Lewis B. Williams Collection. Fides is the personification of faith: the chalice with the host, the cross, and the tablet of the Law identify her within Christian iconography, while the snake beneath her feet probably alludes to evil overcome. Beham was known for small, highly detailed engravings.","como_mirarla":"Start with her downcast face, then follow the diagonal from the chalice in her right hand to the cross in her left. Next, look down at her bare feet: what seemed like a firm stance is actually a victory over the snake coiled around her ankles. Finally, notice the tablet leaning at the lower right, whose lettering is barely legible.","dato_curioso":"The small tablet at lower right bears lines of lettering that do not form clearly readable words; the effect comes from the dense, abbreviated hatching the engraver used to suggest an ancient inscription.","preguntas":["Why might faith be represented as a winged woman rather than as a scene from a sacred story?","What is the relationship between the delicate objects in her hands and the force implied by trampling the snake?","How does the tiny scale and fine linework change the feeling of such a solemn subject?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El conocimiento de Dios y las siete virtudes cardinales: la Fidelidad - Fides / Ficha en español","se_ve":"Grabado vertical y pequeño, en tinta negra sobre papel blanquecino ya envejecido y de bordes ligeramente irregulares, con grises logrados mediante tramas finas y entrecruzadas. Junto a él crece hierba rala. I pause on what is small and fragile. This engraving in black ink on aged off-white paper is tiny, yet every fine hatching builds the volume of the mantle and the gray of the dark band behind the legs. Her rough open wings recall spread constellations.
