The two cream-colored pages form a single horizontal landscape, divided by the vertical central seam, with slight yellowing, soft stains near the bottom, and the thin edges of other pages visible at the sides. The whole drawing is made in graphite, in grays ranging from faint hatching to almost black strokes. On the left, a dense group of trunks rises from the lower edge to the top; they are long, repeated, slightly curved lines, surrounded by zigzags, loops, and scribbles suggesting foliage and low plants. On the right, two more widely separated trees stand out, with dark, bare, forked branches reaching toward the upper corners and lighter, sketchier crowns behind them. Between both sides opens a clear path or clearing that starts at the bottom center, narrows toward the middle, and is marked with short horizontal strokes. Small dark patches suggest shadows, stones, or undergrowth. There are no people, buildings, or animals, nor any color beyond the paper and pencil. The line is quick, uneven, and energetic, with areas left almost blank. In the upper left corner a small handwritten number can barely be made out.","contexto":"This is pages 64 and 65 of a sketchbook by Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), an American artist born in Newfoundland, now Canada, dated circa 1919-1921 and titled in the source as Sketchbook, The Dells, No. 127: Landscape. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the volume, the book contains 59 pages of graphite drawings and 16 watercolors made at various locations on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. It belongs to the Drawings department and was a gift of Mrs. Charles E. Prendergast. The exact spot drawn on these two pages is not recorded, so it is probably one of the Cape Ann sites gathered in the book rather than a securely identified view.","como_mirarla":"Start with the vertical seam at the center and follow how the path crosses it, joining the two pages into a single scene. Then compare the dense, heavily worked trees on the left with the more open space on the right. Finally, look for the lightest strokes: they are what turn scribbles into leaves, ground, and distance.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual observation: near the lower center, just right of the seam, a couple of curved strokes form a shape like a half-open eye on the ground, although it most likely marks a stone, a shadow, or a patch of terrain.","preguntas":["How much information does a drawing need before we recognize a place without seeing a single finished detail?","What changes when we understand that this landscape occupies two pages of a notebook and not a single sheet?","Does the contrast between the dense left side and the open right side convey shade and coolness, or movement and restlessness?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cuaderno de bocetos, The Dells, N° 127, páginas 64 y 65: Paisaje - Maurice Prendergast, c. 1919-1921","se_ve":"La imagen muestra un cuaderno de bocetos abierto, fotografiado de frente sobre un fondo gris oscuro. I focus on the cream colored paper with its light yellowing and soft stains near the lower edge.
