The paper is pale grayish blue, matte and slightly grainy, with irregular, worn and somewhat darkened edges, especially along the top and right side; there is a small yellowish stain in the upper right corner and, near the top center, a handwritten “24” in dark ink. Running diagonally from the hand on the left to the elbow on the right is a bare left arm, cut off at mid-bicep by the drawing itself. The hand is foreshortened and partly in profile, with the thumb raised and the other fingers flexed or overlapping, only lightly defined. The outline is drawn in soft black chalk; volume is built with short, cross-hatched strokes along the underside of the forearm and with white touches that light the knuckles, wrist and muscles. The light seems to come from above. Below the arm, the paper remains almost empty except for faint, nearly erased circular white marks and a tiny brown spot. The scale feels intimate: clearly the size of a study page, not a monumental work.","contexto":"According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is page 47 of the Verona Sketchbook, drawn in 1760 by the Italian artist Francesco Lorenzi (1723–1787), using black chalk with white heightening. In eighteenth-century artistic training, sketchbooks gathered studies of hands, arms, drapery and figures that could later be reused in paintings, so this page is probably a preparatory exercise. The work it may have been made for is not known. The blue paper provided a middle tone: black created the shadows and white produced the highlights.","como_mirarla":"First follow the diagonal from the elbow to the fingertips and notice how little line is needed to suggest movement. Then look closely at the hand: the raised thumb and the white touches on the knuckles change a simple anatomical exercise into a gesture that seems to point or bless. Finally, step back and look at the nearly empty blue page and its worn edges.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual detail is that the arm floats with no body, clothing or setting, yet the foreshortening of the hand makes it project toward the viewer as if it were emerging from the blue page.","preguntas":["What gesture do you think this hand is making, and what in the drawing supports your reading?","How does the image change when we remember this is a study page rather than a finished artwork?","Why might an artist devote an entire page to a single arm instead of drawing the whole figure?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Cuaderno de Verona: brazo y mano izquierdos (página 47)","se_ve":"La pieza ocupa casi todo el encuadre sobre un fondo negro liso: una hoja vertical de cuaderno, vista de frente, con el lomo encuadernado a la izquierda.
