The page is vertical, with wide, calm margins and two faint stains toward the right edge. In the upper left, about eighteen lines of Gothic script crowd together in very dark brown ink, with compact words, frequent abbreviations, and larger initial letters opening several sentences. Only the final word breaks the darkness: it is written in bright red. To the right of the text, occupying roughly a third of the block's width and its full height, a rectangular border glows with color. A great scroll of blue and gold acanthus twists in S-curves across a background speckled with tiny black dots and small red and green flecks. At the top hang clusters of deep blue grapes among green vine leaves; below, the vegetation changes and bears brown, scaly fruits resembling pinecones, on stems with finer leaves. Some leaves are fully painted, others left outlined on the vellum. The contrast is striking: severe, repetitive writing on the left; exuberant, almost textile-like ornament on the right, with the sheen of tempera and touches of gold.","contexto":"This is folio 131 recto of a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, made around 1470 in Rouen, France, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. The source attributes it to the Master of the Geneva Latini, a conventional name taken from a manuscript now in Geneva; he was active in Rouen between about 1460 and 1480 and was, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the city's principal illuminator in the second half of the fifteenth century. The source notes that Rouen was then an important center of book production, supported by its wealthy cathedral chapter. Who commissioned or owned this particular volume is not stated.","como_mirarla":"Start with the text block and notice how orderly and dense it seems, then slide toward the border until the scrollwork breaks that regularity. Look closely at the shift from grapes at the top to pinecone-like fruits at the bottom. At the end, find the single word in red: a small change of color that also changes the rhythm of reading.","dato_curioso":"The red word at the end is a rubric: in medieval manuscripts, passages written in red ink —from Latin ruber, red— guided the reader through the structure and use of the text.","preguntas":["How does the plant border change the experience of reading a dense text in an unfamiliar script?","What relationship can exist between grapes, vegetation, and a prayer text, beyond pure decoration?","What does the contrast between the empty vellum and the saturated ornament say about the value of the blank page in a handmade book?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas (uso de Rouen): fol.
