At the center, a ruled grid of calligraphic text in black, red and blue ink forms the February calendar. On the left, a narrow column of golden and red abbreviations marks the days; on the right, the saints' names alternate in blue and reddish-brown. Three illuminated KL initials punctuate the text, the largest at the top with a deep blue ground and burnished gold filigree, and two smaller ones within the list, their gold catching the light. The composition is flanked by two vertical borders. The left border is slender, with fine black vine scrolls, tiny green leaves and red and blue berries. The right border is broader and more luxuriant: interlaced acanthus in intense blue and gold, with five-petaled flowers in coppery red and blue, highlighted with white, and oval green leaves. Even, diffuse light reveals the matte tempera, the metallic sheen of gold and the smooth, faintly cockled surface of the skin support.","contexto":"This is the February calendar page, folio 2r, from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, dated about 1470 and attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, active in Rouen from 1460 to 1480, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The medium is ink, tempera and gold on vellum and the object is a bound volume. In the late 1400s Rouen was an established center of book production, supported by the wealthy chapter of its cathedral which commissioned books and maintained an extensive library. Stationers and booksellers were likely concentrated near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was the city's principal illuminator in the second half of the fifteenth century.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large blue and gold KL initial at the top and follow the grid of saints' names. Then linger on the side borders and compare the restrained, linear vine on the left with the lush gold and blue acanthus on the right. Notice how the gold glints and how the small flowers soften the strict structure of the calendar.","dato_curioso":"In Books of Hours, February calendars often include the feast of Saint Valentine, visible here on the line reading «S. valentin», alongside the Purification on February 2nd.","preguntas":["How does the use of red, blue and gold organize and enliven a simple list of days?","What does the contrast between the practical calendar text and the rich borders suggest about the book as a luxury object?","Why leave so much blank space at the bottom while decorating only the side margins?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas (Uso de Ruan): folio 2r, Calendario de febrero, c. 1470","se_ve":"Página en pergamino de tono marfil cálido, algo manchado por el tiempo en los bordes, con el espacio inferior amplio y vacío.
