At its foot are clusters of small round red berries with thin green stems and pointed leaves; above, curling acanthus tendrils in intense matte blue and burnished gold form symmetrical scrolls and interlaced volutes. Between the scrolls appear small ivy leaves in green, gilded buds and tiny white highlights that catch the light. The gold has a smooth metallic sheen that reflects, while the blue is opaque and velvety. Fine black ink outlines sharpen each leaf and tendril. The surrounding parchment is left wide and empty at the bottom and outer margins, giving an air of spacious luxury and restraint. At the very bottom edge a few letters in pale gold are just visible, cropped by the photograph. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was the city’s leading illuminator in the second half of the 15th century.
