On the right, the text is regular and abbreviated, punctuated by two illuminated initials: one small initial in deep blue with white filigree on a burnished gold ground, and a larger interlaced initial in blue and red over gold. Along the left margin runs a vertical floral border flush with the text edge. It weaves acanthus scrolls in ultramarine and old gold with pointed green leaves, clusters of small blue berries and stylized blossoms with white petals edged in red and centers in pale pink and green; tiny gold dots speckle the vines. The paint is smooth tempera with a metallic sheen where gold is applied. Lighting is even, as in a museum case photograph, with no cast shadows. The parchment shows faint staining and gentle cockling typical of animal skin. There are no human or animal figures, only vegetal ornament and lettering. The scale suggests a small private devotional book meant to be held in the hands.","contexto":"This is folio 54v from a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, made about 1470 in Rouen, France, attributed to the Master of the Geneva Latini, active 1460 to 1480. It is executed in ink, tempera and gold on vellum and classified as a Bound Volume in the Medieval Art department. According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds it as a Gift of the Feiss family, Rouen in the late 1400s and early 1500s was an established center of book production, its cathedral chapter wealthy enough to commission books and maintain an extensive library. Stationers and booksellers were probably concentrated near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouen’s principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s.","como_mirarla":"Start with the text block and let the red rubrics lead your eye to the two gilded initials. Then follow the left border slowly from bottom to top, tracing how blue and gold acanthus unfurls among flowers and berries. Notice the contrast between the shining gold and the matte vellum, which makes the ornament seem to float above the page.","dato_curioso":"Books of Hours were medieval bestsellers for well off laypeople: they allowed prayer at home following the canonical hours, like a portable devotional calendar, and the Use indicated the local liturgical variant, here that of Rouen.","preguntas":["How does your reading of the text change when you see the botanical decoration growing at the margin without ever intruding on it?","What feeling does the shine of gold against the regular black script create in an object made for private prayer?","Why might a 15th century owner have wanted such carefully painted flowers and colors around a prayer to Saint Apollonia?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de Horas (Uso de Ruan): folio 54v","se_ve":"Página de pergamino color crema amarillento con texto en latín caligrafiado en tinta negra gótica y rubricas en rojo intenso, distribuido en dos bloques. If you look closely at the case you will see this is not paper but vellum, fine prepared skin that still ripples and shows small age spots.
