In the upper left sits a compact block of Latin text in dark brown Gothic script, about fourteen lines, ruled by very faint reddish lines still visible in the margins. The writing is dense, angular, and rhythmic, with abbreviated words and small flourishes at the ends of some lines. Six decorated initials open successive phrases: most are small squares in blue, red, pink, and gold, and the first, at the top, is larger, with a swirling blue letter on a patterned gold ground. To the right of the text runs a wide vertical border, separated from the writing by a thin line. Inside it grows a plant ornament on a dotted white ground: green leaves, small blue flowers, round red berries like tiny cherries, and curling tendrils. At the top and bottom the border bursts into large acanthus scrolls in deep blue and burnished gold, with pointed, flame-like tips. At the far left edge a sliver of another border peeks in, suggesting the facing page. The surface looks smooth but slightly uneven, with tiny specks and soft shadows along the left gutter, where the page meets the binding.","contexto":"This is folio 59r of a Book of Hours for the Use of Rouen, made around 1470 in Rouen, France, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its artist was the Master of the Geneva Latini, active in Rouen from 1460 to 1480 and the city's principal illuminator in the second half of the fifteenth century. In the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries Rouen was an important center of book production, supported by its wealthy cathedral chapter. Books of Hours were prayer books for private devotion, structured around prayers for different hours of the day. The patron of this volume is not known.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large initial at the upper left and follow the smaller initials down the column, as a medieval reader would. Then move to the right-hand border and notice how the berries and flowers grow without stems anchored to the page. That contrast between strict text and free vegetation changes the reading: order and nature share the same prayer.","dato_curioso":"The artist's name is not his real name: 'Master of the Geneva Latini' is the modern name given to him after a manuscript now in Geneva, a common practice for medieval artists whose names have not survived.","preguntas":["How does the strict order of the text change when the border beside it grows so freely?","What would it feel like to read a prayer slowly from a page where every phrase begins with gold and color?","Why leave half the page empty in a book made with materials as costly as vellum and gold?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol.
