Each line begins with a decorated initial: a capital letter in blue, red or burnished gold, set inside a small rectangular cartouche with delicate penwork. To the left, a tall vertical border runs almost the full height of the text block, lavishly illuminated. The border consists of curling acanthus foliage in deep ultramarine blue and polished gold, twisting and unfurling with calligraphic elegance. Nestled among the leaves are tiny flowers and buds: cornflower-blue bell blossoms and deep garnet-red berries, accompanied by small oval green leaves and clusters of minute gold dots. The painting is exquisitely fine, with thin outlines and subtle shading that give volume to the leaves. Light catches the gold, producing a soft metallic sheen.
