At the upper center, an enormous scalloped shell with a wavy, irregular rim pours a stream of water downward. Around it play three chubby naked children — putti with curly hair — captured in lively poses: one seen from behind on the left supports the shell, one in the middle leans into the flow, and one on the right raises its arms to hold the structure. They are set within a rocky niche forming a dark arched grotto, surrounded by lush climbing ivy, leafy vines, and rugged stone textures. Water spills over a rocky ledge in three small waterfalls to a lower basin, where two open-mouthed sea creatures resembling dolphins or fantastic fish emerge among stones and aquatic foliage. The composition is theatrical, with strong light on the shell and figures against deep shadow in the grotto. At the bottom margin a small inscription and the phrase avec privilège du Roy are visible, and the print retains its plate mark and aged paper border.","contexto":"This plate is No. 7 from the Book of Fountains, designed by François Boucher and etched by Gabriel Huquier in France around 1736, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. Boucher was among the most prolific designers of ornament prints, and his fanciful fountain designs with aquatic motifs, scrolling curves and shell forms illustrate the whimsical Rococo style. The term Rococo derives from the French word rocaille, referring to shell work, linked to an eighteenth-century taste for collecting shells. The work is an etching classified as a Print in the Prints department, a gift of Erich Lederer.","como_mirarla":"Start with the oversized shell at the center and trace the water falling through the children’s hands. Move down to the second tier of waterfalls and look for the sea monsters hidden among the rocks. Notice how the arch, foliage and ornamental scrolls blur the line between architecture and nature.","dato_curioso":"Rococo ornament was so linked to shell collecting that rocaille decoration in this period often copied real shell specimens brought back by naturalists and collectors, turning natural history into architectural fantasy.","preguntas":["How does the playful scale, with a giant shell and tiny figures, change your sense of what a fountain can be?","What natural elements do you see turned into decoration, and what effect does that create?","How does the contrast of light and shadow help make a flat print feel like a deep grotto?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Libro de fuentes: N.º 7","se_ve":"Estampa vertical en blanco y negro, un aguafuerte de trazo fino y sombreados cruzados que simula una fuente fantástica de estilo rococó. Up close, I admire the etching work, with its fine lines and cross-hatching that creates a theatrical contrast between light and shadow.
