The piece is photographed flat, from directly above, under even light that reveals the satin's soft sheen and the slight shadows of its folds. The ground is a worn ivory or very pale champagne colour. Across it unfolds a dense, symmetrical design of scrolling acanthus leaves, curling stems, floral garlands and clusters of small roses in dusty pink, faded coral, sage green, olive and taupe. At the centre is a small floral motif from which wreaths and volutes radiate toward the corners. In the middle band, two little birds perch facing each other among blossoms. A continuous border of leaves and flowers frames the whole square, with a narrow, neatly finished edge. The fragments repeat parts of the same vocabulary: tall stems, bouquets, leaves and isolated birds, but their cut edges expose an interrupted pattern. Several pieces are frayed, creased or irregular; others are narrow strips that preserve only a few stitches. Despite the damage, the embroidery retains delicate tonal gradations and a silky, slightly raised texture.","contexto":"According to the source, this is Coverlet and Fragments, attributed to French designer Philippe de Lasalle (1723-1805) and dated to about 1760-1770. It was made in France in embroidered satin and silk and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Lasalle worked in Lyon, a major silk-producing centre, and became known for large-scale, naturalistic floral designs. The combination of luxury materials, symmetry and Rococo taste points to a domestic interior of wealth, although the original owner, room and exact use of the fragments are not known. It is also not recorded when or why the smaller pieces were cut.","como_mirarla":"Start with the large square and locate its centre; then follow the garlands outward toward the corners. Only after that, look for the two birds, whose small bodies change the pattern from abstract decoration into a living garden. Finally compare the fragments below, as if trying to return each piece to its original place.","dato_curioso":"A surprising visual observation is that the large coverlet looks almost perfectly symmetrical, yet the two birds facing one another introduce a quiet asymmetry: their postures and surroundings are not exact mirror images, so the eye keeps moving between them.","preguntas":["What story does an object tell when it survives as a whole piece together with its own fragments?","Does the strict symmetry make the garden feel calm, artificial, or both at once?","If you could restore the cut pieces, would you return them to their place or preserve the evidence of their separation?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Colcha y fragmentos — Philippe de Lasalle, c. 1760-1770","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo gris liso, una pieza textil grande, casi cuadrada, ocupa la mitad superior; debajo se ordenan en pares cuatro fragmentos medianos y, en la parte inferior, once retazos más pequeños. I pause on how the satin still keeps its soft sheen despite the worn ivory ground and the frayed edges. I see delicate shading in dusty pink, faded coral and sage green that shows the silk work, and gentle folds that reveal the raised embroidery. I look at this piece as if it were an embroidered sky chart. Against the pale ivory ground, the small central motif radiates crowns and scrolls toward the corners, like a star with its symmetrical orbits.
