Its surface is weathered silver, mottled with dark tarnish and warm golden traces where gilding survives, entirely worked in repoussé relief. Three horizontal bands encircle the body, divided by leafy and egg-and-dart borders. The upper band, beneath a wreath of large gilded leaves and a braided bulge, shows a spirited hunt: deer and hares fleeing a lioness and hounds amid sparse tufts of ground. Raking light catches the raised muscles and flowing tails. The broad middle band presents the festive followers of Bacchus: a central youthful male with a garland, a veiled female figure, and companions with drapery clinging to their bodies, arms raised in dance, gilding highlighting hair, cloth, and attributes. Near the foot, the lowest band holds sea creatures among stylized waves, now worn but legible. The aged patina, subtle dents, and softened edges speak of long burial and use.","contexto":"According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this ewer dates to the late 300s CE and is attributed to Byzantium, possibly Syria, in the Byzantine period. Made of silver with traces of gilding, it is part of the Medieval Art collection and its maker is unknown. It was almost certainly used to serve wine in the dining room of a wealthy household. Its three bands were read as a wish for plenty: game pursued by predators at the top, edible sea life at the bottom, and in the center the merry retinue of Bacchus, the Roman wine god known as Dionysos in Greek. The exact findspot is not recorded, but the vessel shows how classical pagan imagery persisted on luxury tableware in Late Antiquity.","como_mirarla":"Take in the whole tapering form first, foot to mouth, then move slowly down the three narrative bands. Linger on the golden figures dancing in the middle; they are the festive hinge that turns hunting and fishing into a celebration of wine and hospitality.","dato_curioso":"The gilding is not merely decorative: on Late Roman silver, thin gold was applied to highlight flesh, hair, and drapery against the bright silver ground, creating a two-tone effect that still glimmers after more than sixteen centuries.","preguntas":["How does knowing this was a working wine pitcher, not a display sculpture, change how you read its lively scenes?","What connections can you draw between land, sea, and the human revel in the middle band?","Why might an elite household in the late 300s, in an increasingly Christian empire, still choose Bacchic revelry for its table?"]},"es":{"titulo":"Jarro para vino con escenas de caza, mar y el cortejo de Baco","se_ve":"Sobre un fondo gris neutro se alza vertical, centrada, una jarra alta y esbelta de silueta piriforme, con pie circular bajo, cuerpo que se ensancha hacia abajo y cuello estrecho que remata en boca acampanada de borde ligeramente irregular.
