In the center stands a leafy, gnarled tree dividing the scene. To its right, seen from behind, a powerfully muscled nude Hercules holds a branch horizontally with his left arm raised; his legs are spread in a stance of confrontation, and he wears a leafy crown. Facing him, partly hidden by the trunk, a clothed woman raises a heavy club above her shoulder, about to strike, her dress falling in long vertical folds. At lower left, reclining on the ground, a nude woman with a pearl headdress holds a cloth over her head and opens her mouth in alarm; beside her, in profile, a bearded satyr-like man sits on a lion skin whose paw and mane are visible. At the far right edge, a small naked child gestures as if startled. Behind them open two landscapes: a castle and winding road at upper left, and a river, hills, and mountains at right. The foreground shows grass, stones, and crumpled drapery. At bottom center is the AD monogram.","contexto":"Hercules at the Crossroads, by Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528), dated circa 1498 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, shows the classical allegory of Hercules choosing between Virtue and Vice, usually embodied by two female figures. According to the museum, Dürer traveled from Nuremberg to Italy in 1494–95 and probably stopped in Mantua to meet Andrea Mantegna, then about 64; whether that exchange took place is unknown. Mantegna introduced him to complex mythological subjects and the nude body, and Dürer reused one of Mantegna's nymphs from Battle of the Sea Gods in this engraving.","como_mirarla":"Start with the three bodies forming a triangle around the tree and notice that no one is looking at the same point.
