At the top of each page a large interlaced KL initial dominates in deep blue and burnished gold, with fine red and blue pen flourishes extending into the margins. Below, dense columns of tiny gothic script fill the pages in black and red ink, with small alternating red and blue initials and touches of gold. Each line contains Latin abbreviations and calendrical notations, with red ink highlighting feasts and saints names. The support shows stains, creases, darkened edges and a blind-tooled leather binding, worn and pitted with wormholes along the left spine. Even, diffused lighting reveals the velvety texture of the vellum, the matte glow of the gold, and subtle cockling of the parchment stretched over time. The scale and finish suggest a luxurious liturgical volume intended to be read on a lectern, both functional and sumptuous.","contexto":"This is folio 10r of the so-called Gotha Missal, an illuminated missal made around 1375 in Paris in ink, tempera and gold on vellum with a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons and is largely attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of King Charles V (died 1380), a style shared by several illuminators in and around Paris. The book may have been made for Charles V or a Valois prince given its magnificence, but this cannot be proven as it lacks royal portraits and a colophon. It is named after its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.","como_mirarla":"Start with the two large blue and gold KL initials at the top, then follow the red and black text columns as a yearly calendar. Notice the delicate marginal flourishes growing from the initials and the wear on the parchment and leather edges, traces of centuries of liturgical use.","dato_curioso":"The calendar seen here lists saints feasts throughout the liturgical year, and while richly decorated with gold its purpose was practical: to organize the priest's daily masses.","preguntas":["How does your reading change if you think of this calendar not as art to admire but as a daily tool for celebrating mass?","What do the colors red, blue and gold tell you about hierarchy, feast days and solemnity on the page?","What traces of time — stains, wrinkles, worn leather — make you imagine the hands that once used this book?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha: Fol. 10r, Calendario (c. 1375)","se_ve":"Se ve un libro abierto de gran formato, fotografiado en vista cenital sobre fondo oscuro, mostrando dos páginas enfrentadas de pergamino amarillento y arrugado.
