Each page is divided into two narrow columns of dense Latin script in dark brown ink, interrupted by lines and words in red. Scattered through the text are large decorated initials in deep blue, dusty pink, and red, several filled with spiralling foliage and touches of gold that catch the light. From many initials, thin vine stems escape into the margins: curling black tendrils ending in small pointed leaves in green, blue, pink, and gold, like ivy climbing around the text block. Smaller red and blue initials mark new sections within the columns. The parchment is not perfectly white; it shows soft stains, gentle undulations, and slightly darkened edges. On the left, the thickness of many stacked leaves is visible, and on both sides the worn brown leather binding peeks out. In the upper right corner of the right-hand page a small handwritten number, 121, can be made out. Nothing is printed or mechanically regular: letter size, spacing, and ornament vary subtly, making the overall effect both orderly and alive.","contexto":"This opening is folio 120v of the so-called Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris, France, around 1375, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of King Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to Charles V or to a Valois prince, but this is not known for certain: there are no royal portraits or a colophon to prove it. Its name comes from its later owners, the German dukes of Gotha.","como_mirarla":"First, stand back and notice the rhythm of the four columns, almost like woven fabric. Then move closer to one decorated initial and follow its vine into the margin. That small tendril changes everything: the apparently uniform page reveals itself as handwork full of decisions.","dato_curioso":"Despite its luxurious decoration, the manuscript contains no royal portrait or colophon naming its patron, so its possible ownership by Charles V cannot be proved.","preguntas":["What changes when a text meant to be read aloud in ritual becomes an object of luxury and display?","How do the vines in the margins affect your reading of such a dense, uniform page?","If you cannot read Latin, what other kinds of information do the colors, initials, and gold still communicate?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha: fol.
