Two large vellum pages, warm ivory in tone and slightly uneven at the edges, meet at a soft shadow along the central gutter. The leather binding, worn brown and frayed at the corners, peeks out around the page block; at the left, the stacked fore-edges of many leaves are visible. Each page is laid out in two narrow columns of dense Gothic script in dark brown and black ink. The text is not uniform: lines in muted red alternate with the main script and mark divisions, prayers, or instructions. Down the columns rise large decorated initials, about the height of several lines, painted in deep blue and crimson with fine white highlights and delicate pen flourishes in red and blue that spill into the margins like tiny vines. Smaller initials repeat at a quieter scale throughout. The handwriting is compact, angular, and highly abbreviated, so the page reads at a distance as a woven texture rather than as separate words. Light is even and soft, revealing the matte surface of the vellum, slight cockling near the edges, and a small handwritten folio number, 144, at the upper right. Nothing is staged beyond the book itself; its scale, craft, and wear carry the scene.","contexto":"This opening belongs to the Gotha Missal, a bound volume made in Paris around 1375 with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. Most of its decoration is attributed to the Master of the Boqueteaux and his workshop, an illuminator active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. The museum notes that it may have belonged to the king, but this cannot be proven: there are no royal portraits and no colophon. It was probably made for a Valois prince. Its name comes from the German dukes of Gotha, later owners.","como_mirarla":"Start with the rhythm of the two columns and let your eye travel from initial to initial, as a medieval reader would. Then look closely at the red passages: they interrupt the dark script and organize the use of the book. Finally, notice the margins and the worn binding; their emptiness and wear change an ornamental page into an object that was handled.","dato_curioso":"The red writing is known as rubrication, from the Latin ruber, meaning red; it was added to guide reading aloud and to mark divisions during worship.","preguntas":["Who could read this page fluently in the fourteenth century, and who would have experienced it mainly by hearing it read aloud?","What changes when a sacred text is not only read, but also looked at as a luxury object?","What can the worn binding and the carefully preserved pages tell us together about the life of this book?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha, fol. If you come closer you will see it is not paper but vellum, in a warm ivory tone with slightly irregular edges and a gentle ripple near the border.
