The two visible pages are made of cream-colored vellum, slightly uneven at the edges, with a fine, matte texture and light aging stains, especially toward the bottom corners. At the center, the gutter sinks into a soft shadow that emphasizes the thickness of the book: on the left, numerous stacked leaves and a worn binding edge can be seen. Each page holds two dense columns of small Gothic script in dark brown ink, written in Latin with frequent abbreviations. The reading is punctuated by rubrics in red and decorated initials in blue and red, some with fine pen flourishing that extends into the margin. On the right page, the folio number '157' appears at the upper right, with red marks above it; on the left, a large initial near the middle and smaller red initials guide the eye. The margins are wide but not empty: there are tiny marginal notes and, at the bottom of the left page, a smaller, faded addition of several lines. The overall light is even, without glare, revealing the irregular surface of the vellum and the precision of the handwriting.","contexto":"This is folio 157r of the so-called Gotha Missal, made in Paris, France, around 1375, with ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and a blind-tooled leather binding. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, its decoration is typical of deluxe Parisian books made for aristocratic or royal patrons, and most of it is attributed to the workshop of the Master of the Boqueteaux, active at the court of Charles V, who died in 1380. It may have belonged to the king, but this cannot be proven: it has no royal portraits and no colophon. It was probably made for a Valois prince. It takes its name from the German dukes of Gotha, its later owners.","como_mirarla":"First, look at the opening as a whole and notice how little empty space is left around the four columns of text. Next, look for the blue and red initials: they break up the reading and mark new sections. A tiny, faded note in the lower left margin changes the reading of the page: this was not only a precious object, it was also a working book that someone annotated.","dato_curioso":"Surprising visual observation: amid the order of the main columns, a much smaller, faded hand added a note at the bottom of the left page — a sign that this luxury manuscript continued to be read and corrected over time.","preguntas":["What does it mean that a book made for luxury was also annotated and used?","How did color help a medieval reader navigate such a dense text without page numbers as we know them today?","What can we learn — and what can we never know — about its first owner from the absence of portraits or a colophon?"]},"es":{"titulo":"El Misal de Gotha: fol.
